Reminiscing Dance - Brass Band - LM983
COMPOSER: Chris AllenReminiscing Dance is the most traditional of all the brass band works I have written so far, but it contains beautiful melodies that should appeal to most audiences. The piece is similar in nature to 'The Three Bells',the central movement of Gordon Langford's Three Haworth Impressions, and is inspired by rural imagery and the idea of a widow recalling their precious experiences with their loved one. The general mood of the piece is one of happiness tinged with wistfulness and longing, beginning with a lilting, but not jolly triple time melody in the soprano cornet. This melody gives way to a more jovial tune at bar 56 which can afford to be played with more humour and freedom, but at bar 86 the atmosphere should darken again, with a subdued dynamic and smoother articulation. At bar 114, the upbeat music of the opening returns but bolder than before, to represent a feeling of anger that the opportunity to spend cherished time with a loved one has been stripped away by death. An intense countermelody in the euphoniums and baritones grinds painfully against the main tune in the cornets, before a soft close that suggests ultimately the dominant emotion of the piece is one of happy memories rather than loss.Chris Allen, December 2021

The Great Gate of Kiev - Brass Band - LM470
COMPOSER: Mussorgsky / RavelARRANGER: Neil LockI set out to create an "easy" arrangement for brass band of this famous piece;a Russian classic, and yet made (by a Frenchman) memorably Ukrainian.I decided to bring it down by a fourth from the original key, and also to put it into 2/4 tomake it more easily readable.I tried to stick as close as I could to Ravel's orchestration. That proved easiersaid than done. But I came away with two take home messages. One, Modest Mussorgsky composed a fine piece of music. And two, the genius Maurice Ravel used it to create one of the greatest musical treasures ever written.

From Waterloo To The Somme - Brass Band - LM774
COMPOSER: Traditional, Rossini, Will D. Cobb & Frederic WeatherlyARRANGER: Laurie JohnstonA great collection of war songs from The Battle of Waterloo to The SommeThe four main melodies in this piece are..1 Over the hills and Far Away. This song dates back as far as Queen Anne but was popular among soldiers during the Napoleonic Wars. Probably the most well known version these days is that by John Tams from the television series Sharpe.2 The Green Hills of Tyrol. This is one of the oldest tunes played by pipe bands today although originally written by Rossini for the William Tell ballet music. Pipe major John MacLeod of the 93rd Sutherland Highlanders heard it played by a Sardinian Military band during the Crimean War and transcribed it for pipes as a tribute to the number of VC's won by Scottish regiments in this conflict. It became very well known when Andy Stewart took the tune for his song The Scottish Soldier.3 Goodbye Dolly Gray. This is a music hall song by Will D. Cobb and was popularised as a Boer War anthem. It was written during the earlier Spanish - American and held it's popularity through to the first world war.4 Roses of Picardy.Written by Frederick Wetherly in 1916 it became a very big hit with the soldiers fighting in the trenches. Picardy is a region of northern France where the Somme battlefields are to be found which among other things possibly accounts for the songs great popularity. It sold on average 50.000 copies a month during the great war.

Skomer - Brass Band Full Score & Parts - LM294
COMPOSER: Alex McGeeSkomer Island, situated off the Pembrokeshire coast is a haven for a wide variety of marine life, notably sea birds.Puffins, gannets and shearwaters congregate in vast numbers over the cliffs while on land the Skomer Vole is unique to the island. At sea, porpoise, grey seals and dolphins abound, often putting on spectacular displays for visitors lucky enough to see them at play. This work tries to encapsulate some of the ebullience that the wildlife displays. As the work begins picture yourself as a bird, perhaps one of the kestrels that nest there hovering over the teeming mass of sea birds below, seeing puffins bobbing along, gannets diving for fish and gulls soaring on the breeze.Next, with a change of time signature, we dive below the surface, swimming along side playful seals and dolphins before leaping from the water full of the joys of life. However, the music takes us to a more brutal reality, the plight of such island idylls across the world. The music encourages you to reflect on the fragility of nature, and on the damage we are doing to these precious environments.Following this reflection, we are once again uplifted, with the composer taking inspiration from natures ability to overcome all we have thrown in her way and survive.Note to the conductor re percussionThe glockenspiel part is optional and can be played in place of the vibraphone where one is unavailable. The timpanist will require four drums for the performance and adequate time is given for changes throughout.Suitable for Most Bands - Duration 4'.00" (Approx.)

The Sirens - Brass Band - LM984
COMPOSER: Chris AllenThe Sirens was written for the 2019 University of Birmingham Music Society Composition Competition, and performed for the first time by the University's Brass Band in November 2021. The piece aims to reflect the state of being mesmerized by the mythological singing enchantresses, which lure sailors to their deaths with their beautiful song. Inspired by the work of John McCabe, the music consists of many small sections, presenting similar material indifferent guises to produce a mosaic form. Also characteristic is the useof small-group scoring, cadenzas and colourful harmonies.A quiet opening featuring a flugel solo depicts a ship rocking unsteadily in sparse, choppy waters, before the introduction of mysterious tune in the basses. Following this, the mood shifts rapidly and frequently to represent the dual, dangerously attractive nature of the sirens. The piece is launched towards its conclusion from letter K as the tempo picks up and the musical gestures become more aggressive, climaxing at letter Nwith a brillante triple-tongued closing passage.Chris Allen, December 2021

All Shall Be Well - Brass Band - LM931
COMPOSER: Tamsin TateCOMPOSERS NOTE"All shall be well" was composed during the first lockdown of the Covid crisis, from May 2020.This was a worrying time for many and a time of great anxiety and sadness for some.I have always tried to be practically optimistic in trying times, but still I needed hope.I am lucky to have a faith in God which gives me hope and assurance that things will be better, and I also know that music, particularly playing it, can help express some of these emotions.Certainly, music through the crisis was a wonderful, enjoyable escape for meand one I shared with my family and my band family through our online recordings.Julian of Norwich was an anchoress in the 14th Century. She set herself apart for God and spent a lot of time in prayer.Interestingly, she was the first published woman in the English language.Julian of Norwich is quoted as saying "all shall be well, all shall be well, and all manner of thing shall be well." The paraphrase of this spurred me on to develop this piece for brass band.Hopefully you will also find that the music portrays the worries and trials of this uniquetime through the natural minor key, with the rhythm hinting towards the phrase"All shall be well" and then the dawning transition to the major keyfollowed by a triumphant ending with the whole band joining together. Thanks to Adam Cable and the Martlesham Brass family for support and encouragement always. Thanks also to Alan Fernie and his supportive critique of my initial efforts.
