On September 20th, 2005, Madison Square Garden hosted From the Big Apple to the Big Easy, New York City's Concert for the Gulf Coast, to support the long-term relief and rebuilding efforts following Hurricane Katrina. This live concert featured New Orleans musical legends joined onstage with many of music's biggest names. The event raised over $9 million to benefit long-term hurricane relief efforts, and the concert telecast was one of the highest-rated programs to ever air. "At his death in 1519 Leonardo da Vinci was the most celebrated artist of his age, but his current celebrity draws much of its potency from his amazingly varied interests in all branches of Renaissance knowledge. Many of his ideas are contained in sketchbooks and Philip Wilby's work takes a sequence of these as a springboard. A Southern Sketch is a quaint melody suggestive, perhaps of the cotton fiels of the southern USA. Clean tonguing is required in the second strain, while the meno mosso requires a soft undertone.

Percy Fletcher was a well-known British composer in the early 1900s and was noted for his pioneering efforts for brass band (efforts that were later taken up by other composers, such as Gustav Holst, Ralph Vaughan Williams, and Gordon Jacob). This exhilarating work is described by the composer as “a comedy overture” and has been adapted here for the modern symphonic band by Brant Karrick.
