I WONDER AS I WANDER (Brass Band Set) - Andrew Blyth

I wonder as I wander' was originally collected from North Carolina by the leading folksong collector, John Jacob Niles. It is said that he paid a young travelling evangelist, Annie Morgan, 25 cents an hour to sing the song until he had memorised it! Often referred to as a traditional Appalachian carol, it is unclear exactly how old the melody is.

This solo was written for Derick Kane and consists of two sections. The first is built on an original, lyrical melody which is introduced immediately by the soloist while the second is more virtuosic in style and features a tune by the late Keith Prynn, 'I feel like singing all the time'. The solo is jaunty and light-hearted, with a fine sense of style, and not without a dash of humour.

Written for the re-opening of the Salvation Army building at Romford, this sparkling festival march features the tune, 'Ring the bell, watchman' to which the words, 'Come, join our army, to battle we go' are associated.

The popularity of this modern song is evidenced by the frequent use it enjoys during Sunday worship in many different denominational churches.
