The Old Testament book of Ecclesiastes, Chapter 3 commences: To every thing there is a season, and a time to every purpose under the heaven; a time to be born; a time to dance; a time to love; a time to hate; a time to die; a time to mourn; a time for war; a time for peace. These extracts are each represented by a variation, or part variation, which attempt a musical portrayal of the individual characteristics of the moods of the activities listed. The Flirt is dainty, inconstant, and capricious - the downcast eyes and the toss of the head are represented musically.

The Four Temperaments was commissioned by the Yorkshire Imperial Band and first performed by them in 1983. The suite depicts the four traditional temperaments, as Nielsen had done in his second symphony: Sanguine, Phlegmatic, Melancholic, and Choleric, though each movement stands up as absolute music. The composer has said of The Four Temperaments: 'The Melancholic wants to be broad, warm and grand, without haste or hysteria. As for the rest, it should go like a bomb.' It does! Duration: 22:00

A gentle rocking song for a newborn King. This is one of Ireland's best-known works and ideally suits the warm homoginous sound of the brass band.

Then come Wayfarer - light and playfully delicate; Pilgrim - broad and flowing with a lively middle section; Sundowner - very relaxed with a gently easy rhythm; and Commuter - the busiest movement bustling along to a grandiozo finale.
