This magical three-verse setting for SATB Choir, Piano and Brass Quintet of the beautiful Canadian Christmas hymn The Huron Carol was commissioned by Jeff Hunt and the St Charles Singers and Millar Brass Quintet for their Christmas concert series in 2023. The original hymn is actually Canada's oldest Christmas song, also known as 'Twas in the Moon of Wintertime. Various versions of this setting are available from this website, including SATB Choir with Piano, as well as full versions for Brass Band, Concert Band, Full Orchestra and String Orchestra. All versions are set in the same key and so could be used as accompaniments to this particular version. Beaufort Fanfare, by German composer Friedrich Gattermann, is a dynamic and vibrant musical work inspired by the Beaufort scale, a system for estimating wind speeds. Originally composed for brass ensemble and percussion, it was created to showcase Orchestral Tools' Beaufort Brass sample library, recorded at the iconic AIR Studios in London. Here it has been set for brass band. A central element of Beaufort Fanfare is its exploration of musical density. The piece begins with a single motif and gradually builds in complexity and richness, reflecting the increasing strength of the wind. As it progresses, the music intensifies, with the development of density playing a crucial role in conveying the evolving character of the elements. Don't Cry For Me Argentina is the best-known song from the 1976 musical Evita. It was sung by Eva Peron when she was addressing the crowds amassed in the square below her balcony. More recently it was a hit for Madonna, who sang it in the 1996 film version of Evita. This arrangement for Brass Band retains the broad emotive melody of the original together with its intense emotion.

This quiet piece with its broad tones was originally written for brass band on request of Robert Leveugle, chairman of the composer's own band: Brass Band Midden Brabant (Belgium). The direct cause was a visit to the beautiful cathedral of the English city Canterbury, in which so many fine compositions sounded throughout the centuries. Later on, Jan Van der Roost rescored this piece for symphonic wind band, exploring the full richness of colours of this formation. Besides solo phrases for several instruments, there are some massive tutti passages making the wind orchestra sound like a majestic organ. By the way: an "ad libitum" organ part adds an extra richness, colour and power to this piece, making it sound even more broad and grand.Duration: 6:30
