DURATION: 4'00". DIFFICULTY: 3rd+. Composed for Strata Brass in 2020 as part of their COVID-19 induced, virtually recorded 'A Christmas Carol' (a new suite for brass bandlasting around 30 minutes in total), 'A Christmas Carol' was used as the grand finale to the whole show in which Ebenezer Scrooge has been shown the error of his ways by 3 ghosts on Christmas Eve and becomes a transformed man just in time for Christmas day. This uplifting and energetic work portrays all the joyous emotions associated with the festive period, incorporating a number of well-cherished Christmas carols and various quotes from through the 'A Christmas Carol' suite of music. .

DURATION: 4'00". DIFFICULTY: 3rd Section+. 'El Torero' was commissioned by the Elland Silver Youth Band for their appearance at the 2019 Brass in Concert Youth Championships, held at The Sage, Gateshead. 'Torero' is the generic term referring to any individual who takes part in bullfighting on foot, with this definition acting as an umbrella term for all ranks of Matador (whom often might sit on a horse for the fight). It also acts as the modern-day alternative to the popular 'Toreador', popularized by Bizet in his opera, 'Carmen'. . 'El Torero' paints every aspect of a bullfight, from the cautios and steady entrance into the bullring, the wild frenzy of the bullfight and ultimately the grandioso conclusion as the bull is slain and the Torero rises victorious. .

DURATION: 4 minutes. DIFFICULTY: 2nd+. 'Maybury Hill Lullaby' was composed for the City of Bradford Brass Band as part of a programme of music based around both the original H.G Wells novel and 1978 adaption by Jeff Wayne of The War of the Worlds. . During the previous day, the first of the missiles from Mars had crashed into Earth and the creature within had gone about invoking chaos and destruction upon all human life nearby. 'The Narrator' (an unnamed character throughout) escapes the scene to his home on Maybury Hill, Woking and falls into a deep, haunted sleep, recalling the horrors he had witnessed before his eyes.

DURATION: 4 minutes. DIFFICULTY: Championship. The title of this work comes from a line in Martin Luther King Jnr's famous 'I Have a Dream ' speech, portraying the vast expanses of the plains of Georgia and the notable red hue to the surrounding mountains. This piece is very much influenced by the music of American wind band composers Samuel Hazo and Richard Saucedo, both of which are regularly inspired by the scenery of 'the big country'. This piece was composed for Jaren Hornmusikkforening as part of their programme for the 2018 SIDDIS Championships held in Stavanger, Norway. .

DURATION: 4 minutes. DIFFICULTY: Moderate. 'As The World Falls Apart' was composed for David Maxted as part of the programme for his BMus Final Recital at the RNCM in May 2017. The work was composed in a time of real political and social divide, with chaos only ever seeming minutes away, and the base of the piece is one of serenity and traniquility amongst the bedlam which is occurring around us all. Originally, the work was planned to be a totally free unaccompanied work for solo horn, however I wanted to make use of the vast space the RNCM concert hall can offer with the surround-sound speakers and decided to utilise a short sound effect track to enhance the feeling of chaos as the music reaches it's peak in dynamic and intensity. Banana Island is an extraordinary fictional place: coconut palms, date palms, mango trees, banana trees and mangroves grow in abundance. Animals live there in heavenly harmony. On a Caribbean danse rhythm, the Soca, several themes develop and create a dialogue between the various registers. A central section offers the cornet and trombone the chance to display their soloist skills. This work is full of energy and brimming over with enthusiasm! This music forms part of the musical tale La Malediction d'Aragne (Aragne's Curse), written by Dominique Schweizer and commissioned by the Lyre de Courtion (dir. Citadel's Destiny is a march that can be performed either in concert or on parade. It was commissioned by the Musique de l'Infanterie de Lille. A special feature is that it adheres to the conventional codes of military marches, albeit with a modern twist. The title refers to the citadel built by Vauban in Lille, "The Queen of Citadels", with which the band shares a destiny. This march is still performed by the Infantry Band as part of their traditional concert repertoire. Duration: 4.15

British composer Philip Sparke was asked to write this arrangement of Hymn to Frei for the Norwegian Brass Band Frei Hornmusikk . Sparke had already used part of this hymn by a composer well-known in the home region of the band in The Saga of Haakon the Good. In A Norwegian Hymn, three verses of the tune can be heard: the first is performed by various soloists, followed by a quieter second verse, before the third verse brings the piece to a triumphal close. A beautiful piece, which is also excellent to use to work on musicality with bands in lower divisions.Duration: 4.00
