£47.50Boreas: The North Wind (Brass Band) Derek Jenkins
Boreas was an ancient Greek deity personifying the north wind. He was a winged god of ruthless disposition, which was rivaled only by the harsh wintry winds at his command. Boreas fell in love with Orithyia, the King's daughter. Contrary to his genuine nature, he attempted to woo her with sweet words of devotion. His efforts were in vain, and Orithyia failed to yield to his advances. With this rejection, Boreas's temper flared and he, once again, was overcome by his icy and merciless nature. Like Boreas, this work begins with slow, lyrical lines that quickly fade into an unrelenting fury of anger. Moments reminiscent of Boreas's words of affection appear, but they are quickly washed away as the piece escalates. This arrangement was written for Joseph Parisi and the Fountain City Brass Band as a small token of thanks. The original version for wind ensemble was commissioned by and written for Timothy Shade and the Bethel College Wind Ensemble. For Free Mind, a light and dynamic piece, Marc Jeanbourquin drew inspiration from a gospel song, namely "Oh, Freedom", a post-Civil War African-American freedom song. In these times of crisis, the composer wanted to retain a positive and energetic spirit to symbolise the hope for better days. The four notes of the theme "Oh, Freedom" occur throughout the work and are brightened up by lively percussions, giving Free Mind a sparkling character that will lift the opening of a concert with enthusiasm. £53.50Hypernikon (Brass Band - Score and Parts) - Van der Roost, Jan
The Greek word hypernikon roughly translates as More Than Conquerors, the motto of Gordon College in Wenham, Massachusetts, the commissioner of this piece. The work is inspired by David Rox's very own name, the first two letters of his name, D and A, sets the first theme is in D major, with these notes being the tonic and dominant of the scale. After the stately intrada, the tempo accelerates and the festive feel of the march emerges. The trio melody serves as a beautiful contrast before finally ending with the opening theme in a grand tutti.Duration: 3.45

Sanctuary was commissioned by Eastern Bay of Plenty Brass from New Zealand and was performed as an own choice piece at the 2018 New Zealand National Brass Band Championships. It opens with an expressive cornet solo, hymn-like in mood. A slightly faster central section builds to a change of key and an expansive return of the opening melody, this time scored for full band. After an emotional climax the mood subsides, leading to a quiet close.Duration: 3.30

Music of a Legacy - Contest Version (Brass Band - Score only) - Ponsford, Steven
This piece pays tribute to the vast heritage of Salvation Army brass band music. Written in one movement, it is rhapsodic in nature and quotes references from just a few of the many iconic pieces from the past, progressing naturally through the different styles of music; firstly marches, followed by meditations, major works and then solos. The underpinning theme that binds the work together is the much-loved hymn, by Timothy Dudley-Smith, drawing particular attention to the last line of the first verse; 'Lord for the years, we bring our thanks today'. This is music of thanksgiving to the rich inheritance that inspires writers today to continue the mission of the gospel through this very special and unique genre.
