Shalom Chaverim is an ancient Hebrew (farewell)song, which was originally sung at the end of a celebration or meeting. It was and is mostly sung as a round. Freely translated the words mean "Goodbye, friends, goodbye and see you again!". The varying moods at a parting have been captured very well by Andreas Schulte in his arrangement 'Variations on Shalom Chaverim'. The composer himself says about the song, 'Although the melody is in a minor key, the overall atmosphere in the song is positive. one wishes each other all the best. Saying goodbye, however, also hurts. When you slow down the pace of the melody and add 'blue notes' in the harmonies, this can be sensed immediately.'Schulte refers here to the first variation. The second variation is very intense with possibly even deeper-felt emotions. 'Variations on Shalom Chaverim' ends on a cheerful and positive note, in fast tempo, and with oriental elements in the melody: 'L'hitra'ot, Shalom' (See you again, and farewell!).

Laura - David Raskin
David Raksin was active in the music business for so many decades that he was thought by many to be the Grandfather of film music. Raksin created notable scores for films such as Forever Amber and The Bad and the Beautiful, though he is best known for the soundtrack to Laura, where the lead character is always represented by the same theme, an "idee fixe". John Blanken has created a swinging arrangement of the famous Scottish traditional tune Scotland the Brave. The usual version with bagpipes is the best known and there is a similarity in Swingin' Kilts owing to its long, drone-like tones in the accompaniment. The theme has been rhythmically adapted but it is still easily recognisable. Swingin' Kilts holds a challenge for every brass band. Artemis
Artemis is the Greek goddess of hunting and forests. In western art she is often pictured with deer, lions or bears with a bow in her hand. The tempo of this march is stately and the themes are "concertante" in character making Artemis best suited as a concert march rather than a street march. Technically this march is not too difficult although at times some dexterous fingering is necessary. The trio melody is especially lyrical and offers various sections within the band the possibility to show off their skill in playing the expressive melody. This excellent new concert march is sure to become a classic and be performed time and time again.

I Believe - Drake, Graham, Shirl & Stillman - Len Jenkins
"I Believe" is a popular song written by Ervin Drake, Irvin Graham, Jimmy Shirl and Al Stillman in 1953. It was commissioned with the intent of offering people hope and faith against the backdrop of the Korean War that followed so soon after World War 2. The number has been recorded by many artists and the edition by The Bachelors is perhaps the best well-known in Britain. This arrangement, which is very suitable for fetes and concerts, features the Flugel and Tenor Horns in a duet, with band accompaniment. It is dedicated to the twins Hazel and Heather who play these instruments in the Woburn Sands Band. Graham Cooper
