2013 Finals of the National Brass Band Championships of Great Britain - 3rd SectionTo some, the tragic story of the Penlee lifeboat, Solomon Browne, would need no introduction, and to some the pain felt is still very much a reality. The composer, born just a few weeks before that fateful night on the 19th December 1981, has created this work as a musical homage to the bravery of the souls who lost their lives and has dedicated it to their memory.Penlee was commissioned by the Cornwall Youth Brass Band using funds bequeathed by Michael Pickett. The first performance was given by the Cornish Youth Brass Band, conducted by Ian Porthouse, at St. Michael's Church, Newquay, on 30th December 2008.Penlee has been voted into the Classic FM Hall of Fame 2011 at No.106. Columbus is a brilliant and dynamic overture for brass band, with a soft and melodious central passage. In addition to the many American towns that hold the name, Columbus is a European space laboratory that is part of the International Space Station. Launched in 2008 by the American space shuttle Atlantis, it makes it possible to carry out continuous scientific experiments in fundamental physics, life sciences, fluid physics, etc. Several hundred experiments take place within Columbus every year. Commissioned by the Brass Band Bourgueillois, this piece celebrates the 10th anniversary of the launch of the band at the instigation of its conductor, Michal Auclert. The ensemble brings together musicians from the various wind bands of the Bourgueillois region and beyond. Thus, just like the space laboratory that inspired this work, the Brass Band Bourgueillois also serves as a laboratory, albeit a musical one, within a territory that is discovering this ensemble and its original repertoire.Duration: 5.15

"Leviathan" began its evolution as a workshop work inspired by the poem written by Heathcote Williams entitled; "Whale Nation". At the time of this workshop the tentet brass repertoire existed of extremely well written original or arranged works of a lighter nature but there was a shortage of works with a greater emotional depth and edge, hence Leviathan's early conception as an atmospheric and emotive work. The workshop piece explored whale sound and song and was a 25 minute work in two parts. After many years of the workshop sketches sitting dormant the new work Leviathan is a much shorter and concise work. It contains only one of the original melodic themes of the workshop work. Leviathan is driven and underpinned by melodic and rhythmic elements. It is a programmed work following the awe inspiring majestic might and beauty of whales through to a hunt scene, the chase, and the ultimate demise of earth's largest mammal. Originally commissioned by Superbrass for brass ensemble, this arrangement is by Tom Barton. Duration: 6.30. Suitable for 1st Section Bands and above.

£48.00Gull Dances (Brass Band - Score and Parts) - Johns, Terry
The composer, who lives and works at the edge of the Forth estuary in Edinburgh has been inspired here by the intriguing "tap" dance that the gulls perform on the grass at certain times to encourage worms to break the surface. The middle movements describe the birds' "dancing" in flight, with a waltz and a slow soaring melody. The piece was written for the COOP Glasgow Brass Band on the occasion of their winning the Scottish brass band championship in 2009 and was broadcast on BBC Scotland's "Classics Unwrapped" in November of that year. Alloy was originally commissioned in 2009 by Redbridge Music Service as a performance goal for beginner brass instrumentalists who had received free tuition in schools across the borough. The aim of the piece was to provide an inspirational opportunity for beginner players to perform alongside intermediate and advanced level instrumentalists. Alloy is an 8-minute work for metallic instruments, which is reflected in its title. It is a fusion piece with elements from traditional Indian Raga, Drum & Bass grooves, Jazz, Rock and African rhythms alongside the more 'classical' melodic brass styles. What culminates is a vibrant and exciting contemporary work. Also included are 4 optional easy beginner brass parts in all keys. Duration: 8.00. Suitable for 1st Section Bands and above.

£38.00Icebreaker (Brass Band - Score and Parts) - Harrold, Tom
Icebreaker was originally written for Superbrass in March 2012 and recorded in it's original brass dectet and percussion form on their "Brass Taps" CD. The work begins with tumultuous fanfare, shrouded by thick chords in the lower brass. This fanfare-like material leads to a biting statement from the trombones. An 'icy' gritty section, once again played by the trombones grows in energy, punctuated by the return of the fanfares. The horns, providing a little respite, emerge in a quiet restrained line, which is coloured by the rest of the ensemble. Before fully coming to fruition, the horn line is quickly cut-short and subsumed by the sudden return of the energetic material from the other instruments, which grows to the end of the piece. Duration: 4.30. Suitable for Championship Section Bands.

Composer and Internationally reknown jazz trumpeter Steve Waterman writes... "When Roger Argente approached me to write a composition for his Spanish flavoured brass project he made the suggestion that a Tango, although more Argentinian than Spanish, would fit in well with the overall concept. I have always been a very big fan of the music of Argentinian composer Astor Piazzolla and particularly the way that the Tango could be combined with jazz. A favourite recording of mine is of Piazzolla himself performing (on the bandoneon) with the jazz saxophonist Gerry Mulligan. As the composing progressed, a fugato also emerged hence the title Fugatango." Originally "Fugatango" featured a french horn improvised introduction section. This new brass band version allows the flugelhorn to enjoy the moment with a wonderful 8 bar solo section, now notated. Later in the work the solo trombone is given a solo section. Duration: 5.30. Suitable for 3rd Section Bands and above.

Inchcolm is an island in the Forth estuary first visited by St Columba in 567 and mentioned in Shakespeare's Macbeth. The ruins of Columba's abbey are regularly shrouded in mist and bring with it a flavour of mystery and legend. Composer and distinguished French horn player Terry Johns (Drac to his friends) was commissioned to write this work for Superbrass and their water influenced 2nd album, Brass Taps. Drac requested that he be allowed to write a solo feature with a proper tune for horn. Kingdom Brass in Scotland premiered Inchcolm in its new brass band form and the solo part is playable by either a tenor or french horn player. Duration: 5.00. Suitable for 2nd Section Bands and above.

Benjamin Britten composed his Occasional Overture Op.38, for the opening of the BBC Third Programme on 29th September 1946, when it was performed by the BBC Symphony Orchestra under Sir Adrian Boult. It was not heard again until 1982, when the composer's Executors decided that it should be revived. Given the dominance of brass and woodwind in this concise but exciting work, versions for brass band and wind band have been prepared for Britten's centenary year.
