This stately concert opener was originally written by Jan Van der Roost for a special event in which six respected wind orchestras (two Belgian and four Dutch) of different composition (two symphonic bands, two fanfare bands and two brass bands) were featured during six concerts. Each evening brought forth a performance by a symphonic band, a fanfare, and brass band, so that the audience could experience all three types of ensembles. This was indeed an original concept. The name, ConZEnSus, comes from a combination of the words, 'Concert Cyclus' (concert series) and 'zes' (Dutch for 'six'). This leads to a new word, which refers to 'consensus'. The general tenor of the cycle is thus immediately indicated. The richness of color of the various ensembles is revealed through an open and friendly atmosphere. During all six concerts (over a span of three years), ConZEnSus functioned as a permanent opening number for each orchestra. Thus the same musical story was portrayed in three different packages.Duration: 2:30

This exciting concert opener describes a day in a life.Propelled out of bed at 6 am. by the raucous wake-up call, we are immediately caught up in the manic impetus of the day. The music progresses through several changes of mood linked by the 7/8 theme but the high energy never drops. There are moments of hustle and bustle, high points and darker moods but, above all, there is an exuberant zest for life. Back in the day I always enjoyed playing the well-known trombone works by Alexandre Guilmant and Ferdinand David and I wanted to return to that type of language and writing in a short concert piece. The music is direct in its expression, mostly exciting but sometimes lyrical. The pace of this etude is relentless and requires some deft double tonguing although I stayed away from too many running semiquavers. The last note should ideally be the high D (concert) but a B flat is indicated as a suitable alternative.- Rob WiffinDuration: 3.45

Kevin Houben created with When the Lights Go Down, a wonderful chorale that can be a moment of reflection in any concert program. The resigned, magnificent melodies at the beginning of this composition slowly build up to a highlight with an increasing orchestration. The piece starts with a suggestive Adagio Meditativo, after which the main theme is immediately announced. A central bridge section takes the listener along through the different spheres at which the melodic and rhythmic drums embellish the chorale melodies. Thematic elements from the introduction brings the piece to a quiet and peaceful end. The sheer simplicity with which this work is written, makes it a resplendent, magnificent concert piece. 'When the Lights Go Down', refers to a moment when time stand still for a while, stillness within and around yourself.Duration: 9.00

Citadel's Destiny is a march that can be performed either in concert or on parade. It was commissioned by the Musique de l'Infanterie de Lille. A special feature is that it adheres to the conventional codes of military marches, albeit with a modern twist. The title refers to the citadel built by Vauban in Lille, "The Queen of Citadels", with which the band shares a destiny. This march is still performed by the Infantry Band as part of their traditional concert repertoire. Duration: 4.15
