Soprano Cornet Solo with Brass BandGaudete is a sacred Christmas carol, which is thought to have been composed in the 16th century, but could easily have existed as a monophonic hymn in the late medieval period. Within the lyrics, there are references to Christ, Virgin Mary, Grace, Ezekiel and Salvation.This arrangement takes the striking tune and re-works it for Soprano Cornet and band, transforming the melody in places, whilst also keeping that familiar tune in its original form. Gaudete was recorded by Steve Stewart & Cory Band in 2016, featuring on its album 'A Festival of Fanfares & Carols'.

Colonel Norman Bearcroft)'Joy to the world' is a melody often attributed to Handel, but it is a bringing together of a couple of brief snippets of themes from his oratorio, 'Messiah'. These were put together by Lowell Mason to form the tune, 'Antioch', which we use for this carol. This comes from a set of seasonal motets for choir. Mendelssohn composed these motets during the mid-1840's for the Cathedral Choir of Berlin. Weihnachten literally means "Christmas" and is a celebratory piece. It has been scored for full brass band without percussion and lasts for less than two minutes. It makes a fantastic opening showpiece to any half of a Christmas concert.

Arild Sandvold (1895 - 1984) began his studies at the Music Conservatory in Kristiania (Oslo) in 1906, in piano and organ as well as music theory. After his debut as organist and pianist, he had his debut as orchestral conductor in 1924. At the same time he also had two periods of studies in Leipzig. In addition to studies in piano and organ, he received tutoring in composition. He was a teacher at the Oslo Music Conservatory and organist and a cathedral cantor in Oslo for more than 50 years. Sandvold brought both Baroque and Romantic organ works to a wider audience. He wrote a number of works for organ, in addition to music for choir and orchestra. The polyfony of the lateBaroque and the harmony of the Romantic period serve as the basis of his musical style. "A Christmas Pastorale" arranged with thoughts about the brass bands possibility for sound and colour, and should be a nice piece to do on concerts in the Christmas time.
