This was written with the intention of creating a 'feel good' piece with a particular emphasis on chilling out; music for a late summer evening after the barbecue embers have finally stopped glowing. The piece is unashamedly influenced by the slower, lazy-tempo numbers of the South African greats Hugh Masekela and Abdullah Ibrahim.

Tango de Buenos Aires was written to celebrate the harmonic and rhythmic idioms used by the great Astor Piazzola, composer of dramatic Argentinian Tango music. This work attempts to capture the atmosphere with a modern adaptation of the dynamic rhythms and descending chromatic harmonies. It is a colourful addition to any programme and good for a quite serious or light concert.

The one piece of major folk music that Vaughan Williams missed seems to be Scarborough Fair! I have tried to make this omission good. This is done very much in the same style as Vaughan Williams, Holst or Butterworth. It includes features for each section of the band and also a 6/8 over 3/4 section.

Trombone Solo.In 1953, a new musical by Johnny Burke and Jimmy Van Heusen was staged, "Carnival in Flanders". Unfortunately, it was not successful. However, one of the songs, "Here's that Rainy Day" became a standard on the cabaret scene.I have arranged this memorable song for solo trombone and brass band. It begins in a Latin style, then moves to the famous Jazz Big Band style. Good key players make the band parts playable by most bands - as long as they like to 'swing'! The trombone part is not easy, on the other hand, neither is it aimed at the 'select few' virtuoso players. Impressive stuff though, with 'written' sections that sound like improvisation.

£30.00Merry-Go-Round - Tim Paton
I heard a recording of a fairground organ playing a fabulous concert waltz from the early 20th century. It struck me that this music was in the same league as another popular concert waltz, "Nights of Gladness". I aurally transcribed it, and set about creating an exciting piece for brass band, aiming to capture the 'fun of the fair'. The piece needs a good principal cornet, and an efficient glock player would not go amiss!

Varushkin
Whilst at the RNCM, Thomas Pitfield asked me to write a set of variations on a Russian folk tune, (the same one used by Tchaikovsky in his Serenade for Strings). Pianist Heather Slade-Lipkin said that it sounded like it should be played by a band!! So here it is! A pretty tune, and a good programme filler."The variations are divided into two sections with an interconnecting bridge. Tim Paton subjects his theme to a number of transions, which includes a 'grand waltz' and comic effects". Rodney Newton

This very well-known piece forms a large part of the musical backdrop to the film 'Calamity Jane', and is offered here in a relatively uncomplicated arrangement which features three trombones as soloists and as a trio. Trittico was commissioned by the Swiss Brass Band Association for their national championships in 1988. A trittico is a tripych or group of three paintings or musical compositions based on a common theme and presented or performed together. The present work is a set of three extended variations on the American shaped-note hymn Consolation. The work opens in grand style with motives based on intervals of the hymn tune. The opening motif, and smaller fragments of it reappear throughout the piece and serve as an underlying element alongside the theme itself. The first variation is essentially a scherzo which echoes the minor mood of the theme. The hemiolic opposition of compound and duple time is used to good effect and, again, the main motif is never far away. This is music with energy and forward movement. The second variation gives the soloists a chance to shine. The mood is tranquil, yet there is always some activity and the musical material pre-echoes the third variation. The third variation is another scherzo-like section, the main theme accompanied by a rhythmic ostinato. Toward the conclusion there is a short aeleatoric passage - a variation within a variation allowing half the band to make their own variaitions in a cachophony of sound. An energetic coda draws together several elements to round off a work brim full of drive, energy, and self-propelled enthusiasm. Duration: 13:30
