Voyage with the VOC Brass Band (Score & Parts)
The Netherlands have been an important trading nation for a long time - partly as a result of their geographical situation. One of the first multinationals in The Netherlands was the 'Verenigde Oostindische Compagnie' (VOC). The aim of the VOC was to send ships to Asia in order to buy pepper and spices, and to take over the Portuguese monopoly in this field. The Company was successful. An era of great prosperity resulted, in which the art of painting (Rembrandt van Rijn) as well as science (Constantijn Huygens) flourished alongside a thriving economy. 1. The Sails are set : There is a lot of hustle and bustle on the quay. The crew are preparing for departure. Goodbyes are said and once the sails have been hoisted the ship sets out to sea.2. A Visit to the Rajah of Yogyakarta: After a voyage of many months the place of destination is reached. A visit to the Radja, the king of the area around Yokyakarta, follows. The dishes and beverages and the native culture in general are very pleasant after having been on a diet of ship's biscuit and water for such a long time.3. The Holds have been loaded: The holds have been loaded to the brim, and the voyage home can be begin!4. Death sails along: Life at sea is rough. not seldom did a sailor die of a tropical disease or scurvy. After a memorial service, the Captain would speak the words 'One, two, three, in God's name ...' and the body, wrapped in canvas, would be committed to the sea.5. A joyful homecoming: After many months of hardship coming home is perhaps the best part of the entire voyage. The quay is filled with people eager to give the crew a warm welcome. 06:30

The composer writes: 'One of my all time favourite films is Clue (1985) based on the board game of the same name (Cluedo, if you're from the UK). Clue follows the night of six guests who are invited to a mansion for dinner. The host, Mr. Boddy is murdered, and the guests must work together to find the killer before any more lives are lost. I implore you to give it a watch if you haven't already, even if it's just for Tim Curry's magical performance as The Butler. Running at 82 minutes, the film is over before you know it. I wanted to create a similar story here with Whodunnit?, which like it's inspiration, Clue, moves at an incredible pace as it follows a dinner party, to which our guests have been invited. This work is rather dark throughout and full of intentional cliches, for which, I make no apology!' £36.94'Mid all the traffic (Brass Band) Traditional arr. Andy Wareham
This stunning arrangement by British composer Andy Wareham is of the popular hymn 'Mid all the Traffic, which marries the North-American folksong Shenandoah set to lyrics by English journalist, novelist and poet William Arthur Dunkerley (written under the pseudonym of 'John Oxenham'). The hymn is very well-regarded in both the Salvation Army and wider brass band movement thanks to a popular arrangement by renowned Salvationist composer Leonard Ballantine. The arranger writes: 'This setting of 'Mid All The Traffic was originally composed during the Covid-19 pandemic as an octet arrangement for single instrument. My hope was to create an arrangement that offers an alternative view on harmony and could be multi-track recorded; allowing performers to give, and share, a performance whilst in isolation. The music was written in dedication to all of the 'key-workers' in the UK, especially in the NHS, who worked tirelessly throughout difficult conditions during the Covid-19 pandemic.' This music was inspired by stories of those working in the dark and dangerous conditions of the coal mines, and particularly those hewers right at the coal face. Based around an original theme, the music captures a hymn-like setting of a miner's prayer for safety. Depictions of industry and difficult times follow, but resolve into a triumphant conclusion where dark imagery give way to light. The music is the composer's proud tribute to the industrial heritage of his forebears. £40.00Chorale Prelude
This stately work is very loosely based on the opening chords from 'The Lamb', although there are no direct quotations from that work. The opening chorale is played as gradually more themes are added above in a dignified and legato subject where instruments sustain notes to give a lingering echo effect. Players need to be aware of their role in this to maximise the effect. The second subject increases the intensity until the time signature change introduces a second chorale. Then, a short imitative passage leads to a rising appogiatura theme and the climax of the work, which re-introduces the original chorale in a major tonality. With versions for brass ensemble, brass band, wind orchestra and woodwind orchestra, this work has been placed in concerts when a meaningful, reflective moment is required.

A fantastic tuba feature with brass band backing. Driving semiquaver rhythms push this piece forwards whilst remaining away from the centre of attention which is undoubtedly the big old tuba! Full of semiquavers and scales rushing up to the top of the range of the instrument, there can be no doubt that the tuba is the star of the show. The solo part is carefully thought through with enough rests to make it approachable, while the syncopatino in the other parts give the music an energy that is maintained to the very final flourish, instigated by a demisemiquaver scale run on the tuba! Intermediate and above ensemble parts, but the solo tuba part needs a fairly skilled and confident player to get the most out of this piece.
