£30.00O.B.1. Fanfare - Tom Watson
Tom Watson was born into a musical family in Hertfordshire, England and showed a flare for playing the trumpet from the age of just 4. Taught by his father James Watson, the prolific international soloist, conductor, educator and session trumpeter, Tom studied at the Royal Academy of Music, where he gained a first class honours degree. Whilst still at college, Tom embarked on a varied professional freelance-playing career and was guest principal trumpet with the Mahler Chamber Orchestra performing under Claudio Abbado, Daniel Harding, and Sir Neville Marriner. Tom can be regularly found performing and recording with the London Symphony Orchestra, The BBC National Orchestra of Wales and many of the UK's finest orchestras. Commercially, Tom has played in sessions or concerts for artists such as Sir Elton John, Sir Paul McCartney, Sir Tom Jones, Dame Shirley Bassey, Ozzy Osbourne, Phil Collins, Eric Clapton, Joe Cocker, Jarvis Cocker, Pete Doherty, Nick Cave, Karl Jenkins and Victoria Wood. Some of his film session work has included recording the scores for Brave, Eragon and Stormbreaker. Tom also works as a musical director, arranging and conducting various projects such as Tony Christie's album Made in Sheffield and for renowned harpist Catrin Finch. Tom also runs his own independent recording and production company Pro Audio, part of Prozone Music, which Tom owns and runs alongside his brother William. The O.B.1. Fanfare was written for the Harper Ensemble, a brass ensemble comprising of Tom's contemporaries from his time at the Royal Academy of Music. It was written for the Leicester Square UK premiere of the film "Ali" starring Will Smith. Composed as a salute to Hollywood and the big screen, this fine pastiche of film scoring is an ideal fanfare and concert opener.

Merry Christmas Polka - Sonny Burke - Len Jenkins
"Sonny" Burke was an American arranger, composer, Big Band leader and producer who during the 1940s and 1950s worked as an arranger for the Charlie Spivak and Jimmy Dorsey bands, among others. In 1955, along with Peggy Lee, he wrote the songs to Disney's Lady and the Tramp.Later he became musical director of Warner Bros. Records / Reprise Records and was responsible for many of Frank Sinatra's albums, and produced Sinatra's recording of "My Way". He was also the bandleader for recordings of leading singers such as Bing Crosby and The Andrews Sisters a highly successful close harmony singing group of the swing and boogie-woogie eras, and it was with them that Merry Christmas Polka became famous.

Trevor Duncan (1924 - 2005) was an English composer, particularly noted for his light music compositions. Born in London, and largely self-taught, he originally composed as a side line while working for the BBC. In the UK, he is well known for pieces such as High Heels and the March from A Little Suite, all of which gained fame as television and radio themes.Composed in 1959, and remembered by most for TV's Dr Finlay's Casebook fame, 'A Little Suite', was not necessarily inspired by Scotland, in fact it was more English in inspiration according to the composer. The piece was described by the composer as 'absolute music', and taking the three movements into account, this is not far from the mark.

Beaufort Fanfare, by German composer Friedrich Gattermann, is a dynamic and vibrant musical work inspired by the Beaufort scale, a system for estimating wind speeds. Originally composed for brass ensemble and percussion, it was created to showcase Orchestral Tools' Beaufort Brass sample library, recorded at the iconic AIR Studios in London. Here it has been set for brass band. A central element of Beaufort Fanfare is its exploration of musical density. The piece begins with a single motif and gradually builds in complexity and richness, reflecting the increasing strength of the wind. As it progresses, the music intensifies, with the development of density playing a crucial role in conveying the evolving character of the elements. Through intricate brass harmonies and rhythmic drive, Beaufort Fanfare captures both the awe-inspiring beauty and raw power of nature. More than just an auditory experience, this composition takes the listener on a journey through the elements, celebrating the force of wind in all its forms. Legend - Geert Jan Kroon
Other than the title, there is no real story that connects this piece to eyeballs or werewolves. There is no real legend that precedes this work. The legend will evolve in the listener's mind while listening to this piece. For me, it started with the title. It was dreamed up by my son. He also suggested a musical gesture, which I then used to build all the musical materials in this piece. I have sought to capture a dark atmosphere with a sense of excitement. Although, there are some not so dark moments in the piece which serve as a musical contrast. I would like to invite every listener to imagine a world where there exists a legend of a bleeding eyeball and a blind werewolf. And if you do dream up a great story, please let me know and share it with each other!

"Optimist" is one of the most well-known songs by Norwegian singer and composer Jahn Teigen. It was written for the Norwegian Eurovision in 1989. It did not win this competition, but is still one of the greatest Norwegian songs from the late 1980's. This arrangement is very close to the original in form, rhythmic- and melodic lines. The repeat at bar 65 may be played as many times as one wish, or it can be omitted.

£154.60Circius - Torstein Aagaard-Nilsen
The work is important for me because it was my first piece to be performed outside Norway. Black Dyke Band/David King performed it and did a recording of it in 1991. In the original score I quote a Swedish bishop (Olaus Mangnus) who lived in the 15th century. He travelled around Scandinavia and drew maps - very important historic material. When he came to the north of Norway (where I come from) he decribed the wind from the north as Ciricus: (something like) Worst of all winds is Circius, that revolves (?= turn upside down) heaven and earth. (Well, not a good translation Im afraid). The fast sections reflects the mighty winds from the north. In the middle section, I borrowed afolksong-like tune (by C. Elling, a Norwegian composer). The text (by Kristoffer Janson) tells about old times when the fishermen used open boats: they had to put their lives in the hands of God.

Set To is dedicated to London Brass and arranged for brass band by Christopher Houlding. It was commissioned by the Aldeburgh Foundation and received its first performance on August 24th 1993 at the Maltings, Snape. Originally divided into two movements, a pensive and richly harmonic Blues and an aptly named Bacchanale, sometimes slow but mostly fast and furious. "I remember playing the original brass ensemble version of "Set To" numerous times in the early nineties with London Brass and always wondered if the composer would consider writing something for Brass Band. As Director of The Guildhall Brass Band, a possible performance opportunity arose in 2010 and I successfully approached Mark and gained his permission to scale it up for brass band with added percussion parts. I conducted the premier of this new Brass Band version at the Guildhall School of Music & Drama in February 2011 with the composer present and he liked it. Although very contemporary compared to most brass music, I feel that Mark's easily accessible style makes this rhythmically quirky and harmonically 'bluesy' work a really interesting concert piece, suitable for any occasion" - Chris Houlding. Giacomo Puccini composed Gianni Schicchi in 1918. It was the third opera of Il trittico (a trilogy). O mio babbino caro is a famous arietta sung by Gianni Schicchi's daughter Lauretta. The song is very melodic and it has a beautiful harmonization. This arrangement is ideal for smaller bands or bands missing certain players as it offers alternatives for many parts and will make an ideal encore. 02:30
