The Nutcracker, for many, has become a must-see event every Christmas, often the principle of Christmas traditions that has been passed down for generations. The original ballet by Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky (1840-1893), which premiered in 1892 was not received with the critical acclaim that befitted such as masterpiece, so he wrote two suites based on the music, and the popularity of the ballet soared, although Tchaikovsky would regrettably not live to witness the success. This arrangement loosely interprets five of the most well-known themes from the ballet in a quasi-jazz setting: March, Waltz of the flowers, Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy, Dance of the Mirlitons and Trepak. LIBERATOR, The (Brass Band Set) - George Marshall
George Marshall suffered a terrible mining accident four months after his marriage in 1918. Confined to a wheelchair for the rest of his life, Marshall subsequently wrote many outstanding choral and instrumental works for The Salvation Army of which this march is one of the most popular.

MOTONDO (Brass Band Set) - Donald Osgood
This march commemorated the International Scouts 'Motondo' held in Holland in 1952. Motondo is an African word meaning 'a gathering for giving thanks'. A favourite chorus from the event is used in the trio section, 'Travel along in the sunshine, on the King's highway'. Unusually for 'general use' marches, Motondo has an alternative 'concert' ending which can be used if the Da Capo is not employed.

SILVER STAR (Brass Band Set) - Ray Steadman-Allen
The title of this march, published in 1962, refers to the pin originally given to the mothers, but now also the fathers, of cadets entering The Salvation Army's Schools for Officer Training. It includes the song, 'Mothers of the Silver Star' (words by Arch. R Wiggins, music by George Marshall) which was specially written for the first occasion at which Silver Stars were presented. Also included is a Salvation Army flag song, 'Yellow star, and red and blue' also written by the aforementioned Wiggins and Marshall.

£91.99A Bandsman's Overture (Brass Band - Score and Parts) - Sparke, Philip
A Bandsman's Overture was commissioned by British Bandsman magazine to celebrate its 125th anniversary in 2012. It was premiered by Black Dyke Band, conducted by Dr Nicholas Childs, at a special anniversary concert held in Symphony Hall, Birmingham, on July 1st.British Bandsman was for a period known as British Bandsman and Contest Field, following an amalgamation of two magazines. The then owner, John Henry Iles, celebrated this new title by commissioning Ord Hume to write the famous march, BB & CF. As a salute to this heritage A Bandsman's Overture starts with the four notes, B(b)-B(b)-C-F, a motive which permeates an opening fanfare, which contrasts a busy opening with a more legato central section. This gives way to a bustling Vivo, based on repeated staccato notes. A change of key heralds a central cantabile melody, first on euphoniums and baritone and then played by the full band, which is followed by a short development section. This leads to a transformed reprise and a return of the opening fanfare, decorated this time by florid muted cornets.Duration: 6:00

Cairo Red Shield (Brass Band - Score and Parts) - Raikes, Albert Stanley
During World War Two, Salvation Army servicemen serving in Cairo formed a 'Red Shield Club', of which one of the elements was a band. Albert Stanley Raikes (more often known affectionately by his middle name, Stan) was for some time in charge of this band and wrote this march in memory of this wartime combination and the enthusiasts who were, at one time or another, members of it.
