    Reminiscing Dance - Brass Band - LM983

COMPOSER: Chris AllenReminiscing Dance is the most traditional of all the brass band works I have written so far, but it contains beautiful melodies that should appeal to most audiences. The piece is similar in nature to 'The Three Bells',the central movement of Gordon Langford's Three Haworth Impressions, and is inspired by rural imagery and the idea of a widow recalling their precious experiences with their loved one. The general mood of the piece is one of happiness tinged with wistfulness and longing, beginning with a lilting, but not jolly triple time melody in the soprano cornet. This melody gives way to a more jovial tune at bar 56 which can afford to be played with more humour and freedom, but at bar 86 the atmosphere should darken again, with a subdued dynamic and smoother articulation. At bar 114, the upbeat music of the opening returns but bolder than before, to represent a feeling of anger that the opportunity to spend cherished time with a loved one has been stripped away by death. An intense countermelody in the euphoniums and baritones grinds painfully against the main tune in the cornets, before a soft close that suggests ultimately the dominant emotion of the piece is one of happy memories rather than loss.Chris Allen, December 2021

    Scarborough Fair - Brass Band

COMPOSER: TraditionalARRANGER: David BealA fantastic arrangement of this classic folk tune.A slightly different approach to this traditional tune. After the initial opening the main tune is played on Solo Horn which is passed onto cornets. A light drum backing compliments the melody. An unusual turn in the music takes you from a minor to a major key and also from the tune being in 3/4 now changes to 4/4.A fantastic concert piece.Would suit most bands.ISMN - 9790570000067

The Great Gate of Kiev - Brass Band - LM470

COMPOSER: Mussorgsky / RavelARRANGER: Neil LockI set out to create an "easy" arrangement for brass band of this famous piece;a Russian classic, and yet made (by a Frenchman) memorably Ukrainian.I decided to bring it down by a fourth from the original key, and also to put it into 2/4 tomake it more easily readable.I tried to stick as close as I could to Ravel's orchestration. That proved easiersaid than done. But I came away with two take home messages. One, Modest Mussorgsky composed a fine piece of music. And two, the genius Maurice Ravel used it to create one of the greatest musical treasures ever written.

Keep in Step! (Brass Band - Score and Parts) - Ponsford, Steven

The Salvation Army song Keep in step is given a tongue-in-cheek treatment, with the irony of a song that speaks of keeping in step at all times being used in a time signature that would be impossible to march to! This does make the music technically challenging and therefore careful preparation is needed to ensure everything remains within the correct bear, and that the rhythms sound convincing to the listener. There is also a touch of Broadway thrown in, with a recurring motif reminiscent of Gershwin's appropriately named Fascinating Rhythm.

Wake-Up Call (Brass Band - Score and Parts) - Wiffin, Rob

This exciting concert opener describes a day in a life.Propelled out of bed at 6 am. by the raucous wake-up call, we are immediately caught up in the manic impetus of the day. The music progresses through several changes of mood linked by the 7/8 theme but the high energy never drops. There are moments of hustle and bustle, high points and darker moods but, above all, there is an exuberant zest for life. There are rhythmic challenges in this vivacious concert opener and everyone gets something to play, but the technical challenges are not extreme.Duration: 4.45
