£89.99Torsion (Brass Band - Score and Parts)
Torsion was commissioned by the Leyland Band and first performed on 23 January 2010 at the Royal Northern College of Music Festival of Brass, Manchester, by Leyland Band conducted by Jason Katsikaris. This colourful and dynamic work is the most personal and ambitious that Simon Dobson composed during his residency with the Lancashire brass band. The dictionary defines torsion as the state of being twisted and the composer interprets this as the imagined dis-torsions and con-torsions of Time, Light and Sound in three contrasting movements. Simon Dobson fuses the traditional brass band sound with drive and energy of pop and funk jazz with optional digitally distorted 'echoes' providing added aural confusion at the points of climax. Although composed as a substantial concert work, Torsion would also make a challenging test-piece for contesting brass bands in the elite divisions. Suitable for Championship Section Bands. Choose Freedom (Brass Band - Score and Parts) - Downie, Kenneth
Choose Freedom is largely derived from the composers' own setting of Richard Slater's words, 'Yes, there flows a wondrous river' for SATB choir which was published in The Salvation Army's Choral Festival Series under the title 'The mighty river'.After many allusions to the song, it is eventually stated in full in the trio section. Downie's effective use of varying harmonic colours, unusual instrumental voicings and modal harmonies stand out in this rhythmically diverse march. There are quite a few loud passages in the march so conductors should savour the quieter ones!

Fresena is the original name for Friesland, a northern province of the Netherlands, with its own language and culture. In this simple mars, Jacob the Haan used two traditional Friesian folksongs. Eriskay Love Lilt is a traditional Gaelic melody from the Western Isles of Scotland, sensitively arranged here by Andrew Duncan as a cornet solo with brass band accompaniment.This arrangement was written in 2001 for Phillip McCann and was first played by him with the Hepworth Band at the 2002 Leek Music Festival in Derbyshire, England. It has also since been recorded by Eleanor Ferguson with the Whitburn Band on Reflections of Freedom.Andrew Duncan comments: The Isle of Eriskay (Eirisgeigh) lies forty miles off the North West coast of Scotland in the North Atlantic. It is a small island, only two kilometres square and lies between the larger islands of South Uist and Barra. Eriskay is one of the islands which form the archipelago known as the Western Isles or Na h-Eileanan an Air. The Eriskay Love Lilt is a hauntingly beautiful tune which is typical of the greater number of traditional Gaelic melodies in that it is largely based on the Aeolian mode, the black notes on the piano.Also available with piano accompanimentor as a solo with brass ensemble (10-piece).

The Swiss canton of Valais is home to a number of wind and brass bands that regularly stand on the podium in Swiss and European competitions. For the general public, the Valais is above all a unique place, between the Rhone Glacier and Lake Geneva, where life is pleasant. The brass players of the five music associations of the villages of Crans-Montana - an internationally renowned "snow island" - were awarded the organisation of the 224 cantonal festival, for which this work was commissioned.

The Tuba Concerto was composed in 1953/4, after the London Symphony Orchestra invited Vaughan Williams to write a work for inclusion in the Orchestra's fiftieth anniversary concert. The first performance was given byPhilip Catelinet in the Royal Festival Hall, London on 13th June 1954 with the London Symphony Orchestra conducted by Sir John Barbirolli.The brass band arrangement is by Phillip Littlemore and is a welcome addition to the brassband repertoire.
