£57.50Marcho Brioso - Philip Sparke
Marcho Brioso was commissioned by The Brioso Brass, a British-style brass band from Hokkaido, Japan. They gave the first performance in January 2012.The commission was for a bright and breezy march that the band could use as their theme tune, so Marcho Brioso falls into the composer's series of Broadway-style marches, which includes Slipstream, The Bandwagon and Jubiloso.After a short introduction a solo cornet plays the main theme, accompanied by a euphonium counter-melody. A secondary phrase from the horns and baritones leads to a tuttiversion of the main theme which is followed by the traditional 'bass' strain. A change of key heralds the trio section, which features a cantabile melody on euphonium; this is then taken up by the full band after a short bridge passage and further change of key.This takes us back to the home key which sees a quiet staccato version of the main theme lead to a recapitulation and a short coda which brings the march to a close.

Sparkling Brass was commissioned by Osaka Concert Brass, one of Japan's top brass bands, and premiered by them on 27th December 2018 during a concert which celebrated their 10th Anniversary. The work opens in lively mood with fanfare-style figures from the lower band which are answered by the cornets. This interplay intensifies until the mood calms suddenly to introduce a chorale which leads to a duet-cadenza for cornet and euphonium. The rhythmic mood of the opening soon returns and leads to the main theme of the work, a modal caccia which features various section of the band. A short bridge passage leads to a change of key and a new cantabile theme which isintroduced by euphoniums and baritone. This is taken up by the full band after another change of key and leads back to the caccia theme. A transformed version of the opening fanfare returns to close the work.

Flashback was written for Lee Rigg and the Wardle Academy Youth Band and opened their winning programme at the 2022 European Youth Championships (Development Section) in Birmingham England.Prior to his transition to the conductors podium Lee was a long serving member of the Black Dyke Band and considered by many (including myself) to be perhaps the world's greatest repiano cornet player!In many respects our careers have run in parallel and a number of my works over the years have included solos with Lee in mind. It opens with an expressive cornet solo, hymn-like in mood. A slightly faster central section builds to a change of key and an expansive return of the opening melody, this time scored for full band. New Jersey born composer and musician John Clifford Heed, who was born during the American Civil War was as a cornet soloist and arranger in the legendary band of John Philip Sousa. J.C Heed was also known as the "March Wizard". According to local legend in his hometown, it is claimed that Heed possibly wrote "The Stars and Stripes Forever". Eriskay Love Lilt is a traditional Gaelic melody from the Western Isles of Scotland, sensitively arranged here by Andrew Duncan as a cornet solo with brass band accompaniment.This arrangement was written in 2001 for Phillip McCann and was first played by him with the Hepworth Band at the 2002 Leek Music Festival in Derbyshire, England. It has also since been recorded by Eleanor Ferguson with the Whitburn Band on Reflections of Freedom.Andrew Duncan comments: The Isle of Eriskay (Eirisgeigh) lies forty miles off the North West coast of Scotland in the North Atlantic. It is a small island, only two kilometres square and lies between the larger islands of South Uist and Barra. Eriskay is one of the islands which form the archipelago known as the Western Isles or Na h-Eileanan an Air. The Eriskay Love Lilt is a hauntingly beautiful tune which is typical of the greater number of traditional Gaelic melodies in that it is largely based on the Aeolian mode, the black notes on the piano.Also available with piano accompanimentor as a solo with brass ensemble (10-piece).
