Music for Greenwich was commissioned in 1980 by the Greenwich Theatre, London, for a new production of Peter Buckman's play 'All Together Now'.In this play, about a down-at-heels brass band in the North of England brought to a new level of self-confidence and achievement by an incoming conductor, the whole cast performed a test piece on stage every night (i.e. Music for Greenwich), in readiness for a competition which they have entered and, of course, win. Although the play is as much a social commentary as anything to do with music-making, every member of the cast had to be able to play a brass instrument to a greater or lesser extent (a difficult challenge for the casting Director!).For obvious reasons, the music is not technically difficult. The work is structured as follows: a brief fanfare-like opening is followed by an allegro section, rhythmic and playful; a slow lyrical section is then introduced (a suitably nostalgic melody featuring solos for cornet and trombone), before a return to the fast music, a hint of the fanfare, and finally a climactic flourish to round things off. This is music to be enjoyed, as hopefully it was every night by the audience and actors alike.Duration: 5.00

This composition by Bertrand Moren presents various dreams which could have an effect on a dreamer's life. Its very high level of difficulty provides a great challenge for the conductor and musicians. You will be taken through a living Nightmare, with spine-chilling passages as dissonant chords alternate with aggressive percussion. Daydream is a patchwork of solos with all the brass band soloists playing serene and soft melodic lines with a virtuosic trombone cadenza. The 'Elektra Chord' provides the signature chord and motivic elaboration used by composer Richard Strauss to represent the eponymous character of his opera Elektra. There are three clear sections to the work. The first is subtitled 'Lust for Revenge' which is a highly charged element with an ensemble approach to the writing; the second is the lyrically inspired 'Laments' where all the key solos occur and the musical language exploits the more poetic properties of the chord, and the final section, 'Dance to Death' which represents a return to rhythm as the main driving force.

Fantasy for Brassband and Organ Brass Band (Score & Parts)
When I was approached to compose a work for brassband and church organ I already envisioned the concept I would use. It would indeed literally become a work for brassband and organ. Without the traditional solos, the organ would form an addition to the brassband orchestration as would the brassband provide an extra register for the organ. In short a homogeneous entity. The most important reason for doing this is quite simple. Since this work can only be performed in a church and because of the specific acoustics of the church, the brassband would sound in al its tone colour like an organ. By using certain registers of the organ and combining these with the brassband a wonderful sound palette can be created. The use of complementary or contrasting tone quality is also possible. The primary theme of this composition is based on these three methods of "colouring". As far as structure is concerned this work consists of two parts. slow - fast. It is built on a number of motifs in which some behave like a consecutive canon. In the fast movement the primary motif develops into a fugue-like section. The canon and fugato are techniques frequently used in classical and contemporary organ literature. The liberal use of structure and motif has lead to the title. A vigorous dance in three-four, it leads to an acceleration and a sudden shift to an even meter towards the end. The second movement, calm and contemplative in character, features the tune Vaghe bellezze ... (Veiled Beauty ...). Widely spaced melodic parts surround two solos during which the tune is varied and developed.
