DescriptionPerseverance was commissioned by Middleton Band to mark their 140th anniversary in 2016, supported using public funding by the National Lottery through Arts Council England, and featured on Middleton Band's CD of the same name.The title is taken from the original name of the 1876 band, the Middleton Perseverance Drum and Fife Band. According to the band's historical records, the Drum and Fife band was formed by six Middleton youngsters eager to learn music but short of funds. Following a whip round, they visited a music shop in Oldham where they purchased a 'one key flute' for six shillings and sixpence, and ('later on') a drum.This determination to make music despite the odds has been a characteristic of the band ever since; at the end of the second world war the band was again down to six players, who rebuilt the 'Middleton Borough Band' back to twenty-six players. After a period of some considerable success throughout the sixties and seventies culminating in winning the National Third Section title in 1983 the band hit hard times again in the late eighties and was down to only four members in 1987 before again being brought back to life. In recent decades the band has built a strong relationship with the East Lancashire Railway, another organisation which has battled sometimes mighty obstacles in its struggle to survive, and has maintained a thriving and successful youth band.The band's will to survive through adversity is reflected in the music, which builds from a sextet of four brass and two percussion players three times, only to fall back to the sextet twice. In the central slow movement the bass drum plays a 'heartbeat' rhythm as the remaining players remember those lost in the war. The relentless pace of the final section culminates in the band triumphing over the adversity which has curtailed the previous two sections. Percussion may stand with them at the conductor's discretion, but only if the band has TWO snare drums and TWO concert bass drums available, as these are also needed at the back of the band in the tutti sections. Hobson's Brass is Malcolm Arnolds score to David Leans 1954 film, Hobsons Choice, was one of three collaborations between the composer and director. Its a story of Henry Hobson, played by Charles Laughtan who runs a successful bootmakers shop in nineteenth-century Salford. A widower with a weakness for the pub, he tries forcefully to rule the lives of his three unruly daughters. Suitable for 1st Section Bands and above. Duration: 10.00

£23.50A Brussels Requiem - SCORE ONLY - Bert Appermont
The attacks in Brussels on 22 March 2016 created a shockwave throughout Belgium and the rest of the world. Equally, the attacks in Paris and Nice led to great public indignation, fear and disbelief. What has happened to the western world? Have our cultures grown apart to such an extent that we do not understand each other anymore? Bert Appermont's intention was to voice certain emotions that these acts of terror have caused: particularly fear, grief, anger, and helplessness. He uses the French children's song Au Claire de la Lune as a connecting thread throughout the work. This piece is also about hope and faith in another world, and is meant to pay homage to all victims, resulting in a dignified remembrance. The musical development is presented in four through-composed parts, titled Innocence, In Cold Blood, In Memoriam - We Shall Rise Again and A New Day. This work was commissioned by the Brassband Oberosterreich (Brass Band Upper Austria) to be played at the European Brass Band Championships 2017.

Composers Kristen Anderson-Lopez and Robert Lopez have once again written music for Disneys sequel film Frozen II after great success in 2013 with Frozen.Many will probably remember Let it Go which became a big hit from this movie.The new movie continue to follow the main character Elsa, who sings her amazing musical number "Into the Unknown" in Frozen II. The song describes Elsa's inner conflict of choice to leave Arendelle or trace the source of a mysterious voice she continues to hear.The song is originally sung by Idina Menzel and the Norwegian artist Aurora and has elements and motifs inspired by Scandinavian herding calls. As always, the music is both magnificent and captivating and will surely be a hit for many years to come.

£45.60Bleak Forest - Andreas Ziegelbäck
Bleak Forest is a piece for smaller concert bands and offers the musicians above all space to improve their sound and their effect playing. The technical requirements are therefore deliberately kept low. With this piece, the composer won the VLAMO International Composition Contest 2022. Thematically, the work is influenced by the composer's childhood memories. In his hometown there was a dark and mysterious forest, that seemed to the children in the small village to be magical. Without a reasonable explanation, every trip into the woods was exciting and somewhat terrifying. There were tales of dangerous animals, which can be heard at the beginning of the piece, as well as magical beasts. The magic of the forest is depicted musically from bar 70 in the andante section. The snapping of the fingers represents single raindrops. From bar 99 onwards, we hear the trek home, with the occasional moments of trepidation as the children spook each other with their fanciful tales. In the end, though, we arrive safely at home because after all, magical beasts only exist in fairy tales... don't they? Andreas Ziegelback studied music education at the Mozarteum University in Salzburg, and history at the Paris Lodron Universitat, Salzburg. In addition to his studies, he trained in ensemble conducting for wind orchestra with conductor and composer Thomas Doss. It was Doss who sparked Ziegelback's interest in composing. In 2021, Andreas Ziegelback completed his composition studies with Johannes Maria Staud. In 2020, he took part in a brass band composition masterclass in Bern with Oliver Waespi, followed by a premiere by the Swiss Army Brass Band.

The Swiss canton of Valais is home to a number of wind and brass bands that regularly stand on the podium in Swiss and European competitions. For the general public, the Valais is above all a unique place, between the Rhone Glacier and Lake Geneva, where life is pleasant. The brass players of the five music associations of the villages of Crans-Montana - an internationally renowned "snow island" - were awarded the organisation of the 224 cantonal festival, for which this work was commissioned.

The title of this piece reflects its upbeat, forward-driven character. It starts out with a soul groove, carrying a prominent theme which invites players and listeners to dance. The slower middle section features a blues with optional solo parts. After the return of the soul beat, the piece concludes with a striking reaffirmation of the initial theme. On a Roll may be performed as an effective opener or as an upbeat rhythm item during a concert or contest. On a Roll was commissioned by the Zurcher Blasmusikverband for the Zurcher Kantonalmusikfest 2024 in Urdorf/Schlieren, Switzerland.

Sinfonietta No. 5 - Etienne Crausaz
This work continues the explorations made in previous numbers, and is particularly close to the Sinfonietta No. 3 in terms of difficulty and form. It is based on various short motifs presented in the first few minutes of the work, which are developed and treated symphonically. The music alternates between moments of great vitality and exuberance, and sombre or dramatic passages. While it is not programmatic, it remains highly descriptive. Sinfonietta No. 5 was commissioned by the Valais, Bern, Jura, Geneva, Solothurn and Innerschweiz cantonal associations for the 224 cantonal celebrations to serve as the compulsory work in the 1st Brass Band category.
