Eventide (Song of Liberation) - Jacob de Haan
A composition with the liberation from the Second World War as its theme. After a solemn introduction one hears the melody of the hymn Abide with you, which was sung a lot during the war. Following there are variations on the theme, finally leading to the magisterial conclusion that represents the ultimate liberation.The work may be interpreted as popular music (with the part for drumset), but a more serious version without drums is possible and, indeed, preferable.

Jacob de Haan arranged the famous piece Amazing Grace for four-part variable ensemble, which may be complemented with percussion. With this intrumentation, it is possible to play the piece with almost any combination of instruments.The piece opens with the song theme, which after a modulation, flows into an intermezzo, characterized by a free interpretation of the theme. The interlude reaches a climax introducing the finale where the melody can be heard once again in all its beauty.

Elegy I - Jacob de Haan
Elegy I 'Jealousy' has been named after John Donne's poem of the same name. This English poet (1572-1631) wrote an entire series of elegies, each with its own theme. Jealousy can trigger various emotions, ranging from disappointment, grief, or regret, to madness and anger. All these emotions have been incorporated into this composition. Jacob de Haan was inspired by three different works of art: a poem (the aforementioned poem by John Donne), a painting by the Norwegian painter Edvard Munch (Jealousy in the Garden) and an old French chanson about jealousy (Je ne l'ose dire) by the sixteenth-century French composer Pierre Certon. The music refers repeatedly to thischanson - sometimes through key notes from the melody that serve as the starting point for new, isolated themes and sometimes through quotations of the original version

Wer nur den lieben Gott lasst walten was composed by Georg Neumark in about 1641 and was subtitled 'Trostlied' literally meaning consolation song. Songbooks at the time showed the popularity of this song and it is still well-known today partly due to Johann Sebastian Bach's use of the melody for one of his own chorals. In Jan de Haan's arrangement the choral is heard twice, once, alternating with the original motif from the introduction and a second time, without interruption, reflecting the composer's original intention - a song of consolation.

Rondeau of the Shepherds," so ran the official title of the famous Dutch Christmas carol 'Midden in de winternacht'. In 1948 wrote Dutch poet and writer Harry Prenen this text. The melody is known by the 17th/18th- century organ composers of suites Daquin, Balbastre and Dandrieu. "Rondeau of the Shepherds" was subtitled "Catalan Christmas Carol". The song itself is because its origins in a Spanish (Catalan probably) Christmas song from the late Middle Ages, "El Desembre congelat. The motives of this song (shepherds, flutes, drums) demonstrate knowledge of the Bible and give a picture of the late medieval Christmas experience. .
