The sound and culture of brass bands was part of Philip Wilby's childhood, and this short Partita seeks to commemorate his childish memories in the musical terms of today's currency. Although the music makes technical demands on the players the piece is, nevertheless designed to involve rather than impress its audiences. There are four movements: 'Towers and Chimneys' which is both heraldic and mysterious; 'Churches: Lord of the Dance' is an arrangement of the famous shaker melody made popular in Martin Shaw's hymn of Jesus' life and history; 'Pastorale: Sunday Afternoon recalls those long and langorous days before television, and 'Coronation Day Parade' - a community celebration with a brass band at its centre. The Salvation Army song Keep in step (S.A.S.B. 986) is given a tongue-in-cheek treatment, with the irony of a song that speaks of keeping in step at all times being used in a time signature that would be impossible to march to! This does make the music technically challenging and therefore careful preparation is needed to ensure everything remains within the correct bear, and that the rhythms sound convincing to the listener. There is also a touch of Broadway thrown in, with a recurring motif reminiscent of Gershwin's appropriately named Fascinating Rhythm.

La fe es la victoria was written for the USA Southern Staff Band and premiered on its tour of the UK in 2018. It is based on the well-known gospel song Faith is the victory (S.A.S.B. 919) and this salsa-style arrangement is meant to express the believer's joy in knowing that faith in Jesus is the 'glorious victory that overcomes the world'.

This is a festive selection of music to celebrate the supreme victory of Jesus Christ. The predominant theme of 'Crown Him!' comes from the Thomas Kelly hymn 'Look, ye saints! The sight is glorious' which are associated with Henry Smart's tune 'Regent Square'. Also featured are Andre Crouch's song 'Soon and very soon' as well as Dave Bilborough's 'All hail the lamb'. In the final pages of the score, all three tunes come together in a statement of affirmation.

Mary Poppins' mixture of live action and animation, together with the exceptional songs from Robert and Richard Sherman, provides a thoroughly entertaining movie spectacle. Julie Andrews's Oscar-winning performance as the title character is exceptional and Dick Van Dyke's Bert, the chimney sweep, is equally stunning (despite that comical cockney accent). Andrew Duncan has put together a very enjoyable symphonic suite of music from the film including Chim chim cher-ee; Feed the Birds, Let's go Fly a Kite, A Spoonful of Sugar, Sister Suffragette and the inimitable Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious! DIFFICULTY: 1st+. DURATION: 4'00". 'Agrabah Sunrise' was composed for the Foden's Band's Aladdin themed programme at the 2023 Brass in Concert Championships, held at The Glasshouse, Gateshead. The music uses a traditional Western Asian Raga called 'Bhairav' - traditionally practised in the early hours of the morning - as it's base and features extensive technical solos for Soprano, Cornet, Tenor Horn and Euphonium.
