Composed to mark the 200th anniversary of Richard Trevithick's momentous first journey in his steam locomotive. This event took place in the cornish town of Camborne, and it was 200 years later in 2001 that composer Goff Richards conducted massed local bands in the first performance of MYTHIC TREVITHICK! Following work in South America, Trevithick returned to his native Cornwall and, it is reputed, all the church bells rang out to greet him, an effect captured in the final bars of the piece. "All the best!" These words expressing good fortune are often heard at occasions such as birthdays, or other changes life may bring. The music association in Rickenbach, Germany, wanted an upbeat concert work to celebrate its anniversary, as a kind of signature tune for the band. Otto M. schwarz had already composed several pieces in this genre, such as Fire & Ice, Last Call, and Funky Brass, to name but a few, and is constantly trying to transport new sounds and bold rhythmic ideas into the world of wind music. schwarz composes original works for wind band and his pieces are specifically tailored to exploit all the possibilities of this instrumentation. Sinfonietta: The Town Beneath the Cliff was commissioned by Holmestrand Ungdomskorps from Vestfold in Norway. The work is in four movements: a spectacular fanfare followed by a 'moto perpetuo'-like toccata. The third movement Hymn is a beautiful piece of music allowing the band to show its musicality and sound. The last movement Scherzo Finale opens with a short phrase from Holmestrand's own 'town song' Holmestrandsangen, which comes again in full at the end of the piece, accompanied by a florid passage based on the opening theme.

Sunday in the Park was written for tenor horn virtuoso Sheona White, and commissioned by her partner, Matt Wade, as a Christmas present.Composer Philip Sparke had known and admired Sheona's playing for many years, having produced her first solo CD and written pieces for her previously.Both composer and performer are huge fans of the late Karen Carpenter, Sheona in part modelling her sound on the singer's sultry voice; so it was decided that this new solo would be a piece which, whilst not being a 'Carpenters' pastiche, paid tribute to their relaxed style and rich harmonic language. Sunday in the Park openswith an accompanied cadenza for the soloist, which leads to a gentle rhythmic melody with a laid-back feel. This is taken up by the band but the soloist sparks a change of mood by introducing a faster light rock interlude. This reaches a climax, at which point the music unwinds until the original mood returns.A variation on the original melody leads to a short cadenza from the soloist, which brings the work to a peaceful close.

£102.99The African Connection - Carl Wittrock
Carl Wittrock's wide interest in global folk-music resulted in this concert-piece based on original African rhythms. Obviously, the percussion section has a conspicious role to play, but the band too may indulge itself in moments of thoroughly delightful excitement. The introduction depicts the awakening of nature, and develops into a dance. The (main) motif of this dance is from a dance entitled Apollo and comes from Gambia. Its accompaniment consists of an ostinato pattern by balaphon-master Maudo Susa. The quiet middle movement is based on the rhythm of the 'gigbo' : a traditional dance from Ghana. In the final movement -which also bears a slight resemblanceto a theme from 'The Lion King'- the so-called 'Kono' rhythm is used. The work is played most advantageously using djembes. Challenge and please your percussion section with 'The African Connection'.

Fast and furious, in fact there is very little let-up in this overture. Broadcast by Black Dyke Band and recorded by Fairys. Lots and lots of notes, that needs lots and lots of practice. Well worth the effort in developing the technique of the players in the band (all players!).Championship (very difficult)

£34.95Pyrotechnic Variations on 1812 (Brass Band - Score and Parts)
Pyrotechnic Variations on 1812 was composed for Brass Band Schoonhoven, and used as part of their programme for Brass in Concert in November 2016.'Pyrotechnic Variations' is a modern day twist on Tchaikovsky's famous '1812' Overture. A heraldic opening introduces some familiar themes, before leading into a frantic virtuosic passage (especially for euphonium!), where quotes can be heard all through the band. This subsides into the central 'slow' section (via the unusual route of a bass and drum kit feature). After a whisper quiet reintroduction of the main theme, we build to the 'canon' finale - ending in a glorious celebratory style!
