The Christmas season presents many wonderful occasions for celebrating the birth of Christ. From magnificent cathedrals to the ensemble on the street corner, instrumental settings of the great carols play a very important part in this celebration. A Christmas Celebration is a collection of sacred carols designed to be played by virtually any combination of instruments, from quartets and quintets of mixed instruments, to full orchestras and wind ensembles. The eight arrangements can be played as a complete work, or the director may arrange suites of his/her choosing. Includes: Fanfare on "O Come, All Ye Faithful," Coventry Carol, Good Christian Men Rejoice, Christmas Lullaby, Polish Carol, O Come, O Come Immanuel, In the Bleak Midwinter, and Christmas Bells.

The original carol was written by the Austrian composer and organist Franz Gruber (1787-1863). He was asked to write Silent Night on the 24th of December 1818 by the priest of the Church of St. Nicolas in Oberndorf, who had himself written the text. No. 2135 Songs of Salvation (Andrew Mackereth)This piece was written for Haaglanden Band in the Netherlands and contains some old Salvation Army Songs; 'Ring the bell, watchman' (T.B. 776), 'Make no delay' (T.B.730), 'Room for Jesus' (T.B. 395), 'Tell me the old, old story' (T.B. 265) and 'Praise God, I'm saved' (T.B. 770).No. 2136 Shepherd's Carol (Dean Jones arr. Kenneth Downie)Originally published in November 1955, this lovely carol was written by father and son, Dean and Henry Goffin, both of whom were Salvation Army officers. Commissioner Sir Dean Goffin was awarded his kinghthood in the Queen's Honours list of 1983No. 2137 On High! (Martin Cordner)Taking its inspiration from the world of rock music, this piece features the song, 'Lord, I lift your name on high'.

A quiet, march-like introduction, representing the procession to worship, is followed by three verses of the well-known carol: once from a quartet, then shared between the various instrumental groups. The popular French tune of this carol first appeared as a secular dance named "Branle de L'Official". It appeared in 'Orchesographie', a collection of dances published in 1589 and written by Jehan Tabouret (pen name Thoinot Arbeau). The established lyrics were written by the English composer George Ratcliffe Woodward and first published in 1924; appearing in the Cambridge Carol Book.
