This composition is based on the march from Henry Purcell's Music for the funeral of Queen Mary II, a work written in 1694. In this fantasia, various movements flow from one to the next following the main theme; these movements not only elaborate on the theme, but also contrast with it. At times, the thematic material diverges so much, that the work acquires a character of its own; however, the composer often refers back to fragments of the theme. This work was test piece in the 4th division of the Dutch National Brass Band Championships (NBK) in 2017. Duration: 10.30

The Raft of the Medusa is a painting by Theodore Gericault and hangs in the Louvre, Paris. It depicts the true story of a shipwreck and of a hastily constructed raft upon which at least 157 people were cast adrift for 13 days and endured starvation, dehydration, cannibalism and madness. The work is a diabolical duel between cornet and trombone, a violent tone poem showing off the techniques of the soloists. There is no light in this piece, no triumph, only sadness. Duration: 6.00. The very evocative tune to this hymn is called 'Eventide' and was written by William Henry Monk. He was an important figure in 19th century English church music and became organist and choirmaster at a variety of London churches in the course of his lifetime. In 1857, he was appointed the first editor of Hymns, Ancient and Modern, a publication that would eventually sell sixty million copies! It was for this hymnbook that he wrote the tune 'Eventide' to the words, 'Abide with Me' by Henry Francis Lyte. This version, for trombone solo and brass band, was commissioned by Brett Baker.

When the New York Staff Band toured England in 1960 they featured much new music written for them by Erik Leidzen, including this march. The trio section is in the unusual key (brass band pitch) of Db major, a major third away from the opening key of F major, rather than the more predictable subdominant of Bb major. This presents a technical and mental challenge to the players but provides a particularly brilliant sonority when played in tune!

In 2008 the trombonist, Chris Jeans, was invited to be a featured soloist at a British Trombone Society event. He contacted Stan Kitchen at Studio Music Company to see if he had any new material for trombone. Stan then got in touch with me, as I had already written a piece for another trombone player, Brett Baker. This piece, Shout! was programmed for the same event so we needed to find something new for Chris.The title 'Blue Jeans' came to my mind, thus linking a blues-style piece with the obvious reference to Chris's surname. I spoke to Chris and he liked the sound of it so then I had to go away and write a solo to match the title!I managed to get a version with piano accompaniment done in time for Chris to perform at the trombone event and have now had a chance to complete the band version.Chris is a great chap, a good friend and a wonderful trombone player so I hope people enjoy listening to this solo that bears his name.- Rob WiffinDuration: 3.30
