Bristling with energy and vitality, this is a terrific arrangement of the fourth and final movement from Piano Sonata No. 2, which is Sergei Prokofiev's celebrated piano solo piece composed in 1912. The arranger writes: 'Whilst I have endeavoured to maintain the characteristics and flavours of the original piece, I altered and added dynamics and musical notations in a few cases where they seemed to fit the medium of the brass band and to reflect a general performance manner of this piece on a piano. I also added percussion parts which provide additional colour. After careful consideration, I decided to keep to the original key in order to maintain the brightness and clarity of the original work.' PDF download includes score and full set of parts. £67.76Temperamental (Brass Band) Fendall Hill
This work by Fendall Hill was the set test for the 2021 National Brass Band Championships of New Zealand, B Grade. The composer writes: 'J.S. Bach (1685-1750) is deemed by many to be the 'Ulimate Composer'. He added an incredible proportion to the DNA of western music, and his influence is heard in the music of today. Like many artists, he was not overly recognised as a composer during his lifetime, and it took an 1829 performance of the St Matthew Passion by Mendelssohn to ignite a recognition of his place in the music world, a place he has maintained ever since. This piece starts with a similar spark of rediscovery of the music of Bach. It contains arrangements of various works, interspersed with composition based on Bach's chord structures, sections in the style of Bach, and original sections inspired by the moods created along the way. The first section explores the Toccata, and great organ works. This leads into an exploration of his choral works, and a finale based on the Preludes. The word 'Tempered' has different meanings, and all seem to apply to the music of Bach, and these appeal to the musical, engineering and spiritual aspects of my personal life. His music reaches to the humanity and divinity, it has strength, structure and order that creates frameworks in which incredible complexity reigns; and the complexity leads to a wildness, a kind of craziness that represents a range of human moods, and can change without warning. The same piece of music affects people in very different ways. I don't know if it's Bach's music, or us, but it can seem out of control and under control at the same time - the combination is highly temperamental. "As a bass trombonist, I spent many years of my adolescence playing in youth orchestras, engaging in musical daydreams. I would visualize myself jumping up from the back of the orchestra to unleash improvisations much to the conductor's horror. The resultant three-movement, thirteen-minute work has enjoyed a robust life with performances by notable orchestras all around the world. Happily, the concerto works well as a recital piece, with many accomplished college players having won concerto competitions performing it. Jazz elements were inescapable, and realizing my old nightmare/dream, quite a bit of the trombone solo is meant to be improvised. I made a recording of the concerto with the London Symphony Orchestra, which was included on a CD called Bach to Brubeck released on Koch International Classics. Having already become popular as a bass trombone work with orchestra accompaniment, renowned British Bass Trombonist and publisher Roger Argente suggested he release a special Brass Band arrangement of my concerto. Roger knew the piece well because years ago he played the European premiere of the concerto with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra at the Royal Albert Hall." - Chris Brubeck. Duration: 13.00. £71.75Armistice at Flanders Fields (Brass Band) Dwayne Bloomfield
This poignant and powerful work for brass band by Dwayne Bloomfield describes the day peace was announced to end World War I. The piece was written in 2023 to be played by bands around the world to mark Armistice Day. The composer writes: 'Unless you were there, it's impossible to imagine what it must have been like the day peace was announced ending World War I. The feelings soldiers experienced, who after years of fighting and suffering, to know it was over and they would return home to see family and loved ones again. This piece tries to tell their story. The work begins by approaching the front, distant artillery and battle sounds heard while the carnage and loss of lives was already known to the world. The band builds as we enter the thick of battle, the death and destruction, the conditions faced and the loss of hope of ever surviving. The next section, in 7/8 time, reflects the two sides fighting - both sides attacking and defending with mostly little result, but for the loss of more lives. Two euphoniums then depict the news and hope of peace talks. However, fighting did continue right up to the very end and on the last day there would be another 2,738 casualties. The Canadians were still battling to capture the town of Mons that morning. A song is sung in reflection of the estimated 5.5 million allied soldiers who lost their lives during World War I, then a clock ticks down the final minutes. The last three known casualties are depicted with French soldier Augustin Trebuchon, killed at 10:45am by a single shot as he rushed down the trenches to spread the news of coming peace; Canadian George Lawrence Price killed by a sniper round at 10:58am at the battle of Mons, and lastly a machine gun burst that killed American Henry Gunther, who is believed to have fallen on the 11th hour. Bells then toll ringing around the world announcing the end of the war. After years of war, it must have been jubilation for the families at home knowing their loved ones would be returning to them. The band builds with a hymn for peace as a final tribute to those who fought, before the piece resides with one of the most dreaded sounds at that time, the knock on the door from a telegram delivery boy or better known then as the Angels of Death. It wasn't just the 2,738 families from the casualties of the last day who would receive such a knock, but many more who expected their loved ones to be returning home would instead find out they were instead killed in the last weeks. So close. Driving around the battlefields today one comes across many intersections in the countryside which have cemetery signposts pointing in every direction. While the last post sounds in ceremonies today, this last bugle call instead depicts the horrors, devastation and death the soldiers faced during the war and right up the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month, Armistice at Flanders Fields.' This charming setting by Australian composer Barrie Gott is of the favourite carol The First Nowell. Although this version is for brass band, choir and piano, it is orchestrated such that it will work for standalone brass band. The arranger writes: 'I have always been fascinated with the words and music of this majestic carol. It was first written for choir and piano and then orchestrated for the Brisbane Lord Mayor's Carols with the Queensland Pops Orchestra. A further arrangement for brass band was done for a Salvation Army event. The setting is for four verses (1,2,5 and 6) and tells the Gospel story in a nutshell. £39.86Nicaea - Band Warm-up (Brass Band) John Bacchus Dykes arr. Steve Kellner
This warm-up is designed to help players and conductors hear and improve section, group, and full band intonation, rhythmic precision, and balance in an efficient and musically satisfying way. The tune Nicaea was selected because of its easy-to-hear triads and intervals, and the harmonisation used throughout is purposely simple and consistent, so that the players can become very familiar with potential intonation trouble spots. Likewise, discrepancies in precision and balance will easily be heard. Keys have been carefully selected to expose specific intonation problems within the sections and groups, like the overlap between Eb and Bb instruments in the horns/baritones and later in euphoniums/basses, and 5th position tuning in the trombones. The format in sections 2 through 5 is consistent, beginning with a single section of the band playing in unison, then expanding into two-part and four-part harmony. After eight bars that section is joined by another section or sections to form a common multi-section group used in brass band scoring, such as the 'mellow choir', 'low brass', 'tuba-euphonium choir', and 'bright choir'. Section 6 features the two largest groupings, the 'all but cornets' and 'high brass'. Section 7 brings the whole band together for a majestic and powerful finish. £35.87Prelude in C-sharp Minor (Brass Band) Rachmaninoff arr. Rob Bushnell
One of Sergei Rachmaninoff's most famous compositions, Prelude in C-sharp minor (Op. 3, No. 2) is part of a set of five pieces entitled Morceaux de fantaisie. It was written when Rachmaninoff was only 19 years old and was first performance by the composer on 26 September 1892 at a festival called the Moscow Electrical Exhibition. This arrangement is for the UK-style brass band, with alternative parts for horns in F and bass-clef lower brass. The piece has been transposed from the original (for piano) of C-sharp minor to A minor, which better suits a brass band. There is another arrangement of this piece by Sandy Smith (published by Obrasso) which is designed for more advanced ensembles. Excursion was the winner of the 2022 BrookWright International Brass Band Composition Competition. The composer Christopher Cook writes: 'In this short and effervescent study for brass band, I wanted to take the listener and players on a journey which moves from a soundworld of bristling, bubbling energy to a triumphant fanfare and finally a moment of repose. The initial fast flurry of notes, highlighted and emphasised by precise elements of percussion, informs the motivic development of the rest of the piece and eventually forms the basis for the textural backdrop to the filmic sounding melody heard around halfway through the piece. The unexpected final passage is intended to be a nod to works for brass band by Paul Patterson and Harrison Birtwistle.' Andrew Batterham's tour de force Trumpet Concerto showcases the incredible spectrum of emotions the trumpet can convey, in the hands of a dedicated performer. The music ranges from Classical to minimalism, ballads to fanfares, culminating in a wild dance full of stamina and energy. Commissioned by ABC Classic through the ABC Fresh Start Fund, Concerto was premiered by David Elton, Principal Trumpet with the Sydney Symphony Orchestra (previously with London Symphony Orchestra).
