Masquerade - Carl Nielson - Bill Willis
The opera, Masqurade, plot revolves around Leander and Leonora, two young persons who meet fortuitously at a masquerade ball, swear their undying love for each other and exchange rings. The following day, Leander tells a servant of his newfound love. He soon becomes distraught when informed by the servant that his parents have betrothed him in marriage to a neighbour's daughter. Things get complicated when Leonard, the neighbour whose daughter is the other part of the previously unknown arrangement, comes complaining to Leander's father that his daughter is in love with someone she met at the masquerade last night. In the third act, all is resolved when the various parties slip off to the night's masquerade, where all is revealed to everyone's mutual satisfaction. The overture is a stunning work, very entertaining for audiences and players alike.

The well-known aria from Gilbert & Sullivan's ninth operatic collaboration together, Mikado, is now available for band as a jolly, light-hearted cornet trio. Most people will instantly recognise the opening stanza as performed by the cornet trio, but the work holds much more. With some great detail in the inner band parts, this arrangement ensures that the work is not only a great piece for the players, but one that the audiences will love and soloists can enjoy. 534: Boldly Going (Wycliffe Kortin)This arrangement is derived from a Kenyan Swahili gospel melody Simama Imara, which means 'to stand firm'. The song is an encouragement to Christians to stay strong in the Lord, even in times of difficulty. The piece has a lively rock feel which requires precision in articulation and a sense of drive throughout.535: Fill me anew (Mark Feltwell)The melody Fill me anew (T.B. 611) has always been a favourite of the composer and this composition was used at the Worchester Corps in their Pentecost services. It is a simple melody with a simple purpose and associated prayer that is the focus of the piece, 536: There's something about that name (William Gaither arr. Kingsley Layton)The chorus (S.A.S.B. 80) from which this piece takes its title was composed by Bill and Gloria Gaither. They wrote it in 1970, having watched their grandparents near the end of their lives and pass away. At the same time, they were, as a couple, embracing parenthood. It resonated with them how the young loved to say the name of Jesus as well as those that were nearing the end of their lives. The chorus reflects the peace and comfort which comes to us when we call on that name during both the good and challenging times in life. The Gaithers are a performing and songwriting couple who have become well-known within the Southern Gospel music genre.537: Selection - Singing Praises! (Noel Jones)A motif, based on the phrase 'Praise him!, Praise him!, Ever in joyful song', appears throughout the selection. Songs also featured include I love to sing of the Saviour (S.A.S.B. 845) and Singing glory, glory, Glory be to God on high (S.A.S.B. 840)

No.2119 Guardian of my soul (Darren Shaw)This arrangement combines the composer's own song 'I worship you', with the well-known hymn 'O Jesus, I have promised' (S.A.S.B. 862), both of which contain the phrase, 'Guardian of my soul', within their lyrics.No.2120 Festival March - Temple 125 (Kevin Larsson)This march was written for the 125th anniversary of Bromley Temple, which is where the composer grew up and still considers his 'home corps'. This arrangement uses two songs that are closely associated with Bromley, the first being 'Jesus is all I need' (STTL Vol.1, part 1) by Hans Knutzen, who was a soldier of the corps and a member of the 'Bill Booth Revival Machine'. The second song is 'He came to give us life (T.B. 662) from the Gowans and Larsson musical, 'Jesus Folk', which was premiered using a cast from Bromley Temple.No.2121 Trombone Solo - Nothing but thy blood (Harold Burmayer)Donna Peterson's recent melody, set to the time-honoured words of Richard Slater, provides a vehicle for solo trombone with band accompaniment.No.2122 Begone, vain world (Michael Davis)A setting of the hymn tune of the same title, with which we associate the words, 'I want, dear Lord, a heart that's true and clean'.
