Raveling, Unraveling - In Search of 'La Valse' was written for the Cory Band as their own-choice test piece for the 2016 European Brass Band Championships in Lille. The piece found its genesis in Sparke's The Unknown Journey (2014) for concert band, and the use of Ravel's La Valse as a structural undercurrent to the original piece is an act of reverence. Sparke's aim was to produce a work that is organic rather than episodic in nature. The composer's view is that little in music does this better than La Valse and for this reason he uses various sections of this masterpiece, both manipulated and quoted verbatim (including much of its stunning closing passages) to provide the overall geography of his new work. As the music progresses, more of the Ravel appears, surfacing completely as the piece reaches its climax - a gesture of homage to the French master.Duration: 16:30

This lively and melodic piece was commissioned by Maltby Colliery Band in 2000. It was written as a feature for solo cornet and the cornet section. For its first broadcast performance on Radio Scotland, from Edinburgh in 2009 Mark O'Keefe played the solo part with the band of COOP Glasgow. Firefly was composed by award-winning composer Simon Dobson (b.1981) to provide an entertaining up-tempo concert work for community and youth bands. Composed in funk-rock style, and is based on the groove beat with which it opens. Dobson says, "Firefly was written as a break from my more serious music and as a 'hat tip' to the various types of beat orientated music I listen to." It was first performed by Oslofjord Brass in Norway and in its wind version by Harmonie Shostakovich, Switzerland. Duration: 5-6 minutes.

The piece is based on the Welsh tune of Llanfair (T.B. 271), associated with the words 'Christ the Lord is risen today'.
