Visions of Gerontius is a set ofvariations on a hymn tune which is invariably associated with Cardinal John Henry Newman 's words taken from his visionary poem "The Dream of Gerontius", which deals with the journey of the soul from this world to the next. The stanzas of the hymn are taken from the poem which Elgar set to music in his great masterpiece of the same name, for soloists, chorus and orchestra, first performed in Birmingham in 1900. Written for Birmingham Citadel Band to play at their annual carol concert at Symphony Hall, Birmingham, this piece tells the story of the Nativity using the carols Who is He? and Calypso Carol. Brief appearances are made by the shepherds (While Shepherds Watched), the angels (Ding Dong! Merrily on High) and the wise men (The Kings' March and We Three Kings of Orient are). The music finishes with a majestic setting of the chorus of Who is He?, reminding us of baby Jesus.

Cantique De Jean Racine (Brass Band - Score and Parts) - Faure, Gabriel - Bearcroft, Norman
This work, originally for mixed chorus, was completed in 1865 when Faure was just nineteen years old and gained him first prize when graduating from Ecole Niedermeyer de Paris. A further version for orchestra (possibly by the composer) appeared in 1906.
