£29.95John O'Gaunt (Overture) (Brass Band - Score only) - Vinter, Gilbert
Concert Overture for Brass BandIn the year 1340 in the town of Ghent, a son was born to Edward III King of England and his Queen Phillipa. The boy, afterwards known as John O'Gaunt (Ghent) grew up to be a warrior and before he was 20 he was fighting in France beside his brother, the Black Prince. For many years he was occupied with the wars in France and Spain and was seldom in England. His first two marriages brought him great riches and position, but the love of his life was Catherine Swynford, who bore him four children. Whilst he was away , his Palace of Savoy was burnt to the ground by the mob during the Peasant's Revolt. Finally in 1394 he returned home and married Catherine, for whom he felt a strong affection since her first marriage in St. Clement Danes Church in the Strand, many years before. This concert march, composed by Tim Paton for brass band, has taken inspiration from the inimitable style of the 'march king', Kenneth J Alford.It's an upbeat, cheerful march which has stood the test of time - it was premiered back in 1970 on the Rozel Bandstand by the Weston-Super-Mare Silver Band!Marches have always been a favourable choice in brass band concert programmes, so here's a great opportunity to bring a new offering to the table which helps lift spirits through its catchy pulse and creativity.Also available as a version for brass ensemble.

Pomp & Circumstance March No. 4 was completed in June 1907, shortly after his fiftieth birthday. Like the first, it contains an equally impressive 'big tune' in the trio section, but it also matches No.1 in that it has a lively, rhythmic march element to envelope it.Unlike No.1 though, Elgar cleverly superimposes one on top of the other for the final, extended coda. Several attempts have been made to fit words to the main tune, the first of which were by the composer's wife, Alice, for her song The King's Way to celebrate the opening of a road in London. The music was then set to Alfred Noye's Song of Victory before a later attempt to make a patriotic Song of Liberty for World War II by the author A P Herbert.Duration: 4'50"Difficulty: 3rd Section and above

£121.20Circius - Torstein Aagaard-Nilsen
The work is important for me because it was my first piece to be performed outside Norway. Black Dyke Band/David King performed it and did a recording of it in 1991. In the original score I quote a Swedish bishop (Olaus Mangnus) who lived in the 15th century. He travelled around Scandinavia and drew maps - very important historic material. When he came to the north of Norway (where I come from) he decribed the wind from the north as Ciricus: (something like) Worst of all winds is Circius, that revolves (?= turn upside down) heaven and earth. (Well, not a good translation Im afraid). The fast sections reflects the mighty winds from the north. In the middle section, I borrowed afolksong-like tune (by C. Elling, a Norwegian composer). The text (by Kristoffer Janson) tells about old times when the fishermen used open boats: they had to put their lives in the hands of God.

Good Vibrations - Brian Wilson
The pop song Good Vibrations, which appeared as a single in 1966, is one of the most celebrated hits of The Beach Boys. The piece, composed and produced by Brian Wilson, has been called a mini symphony.Various covers versions have been made, including a marvellous a cappella version by the King's Singers. This arrangement for brass band, written by Don Campbell, is just as delightful as the original.
