Finale from Symphony No. 2 (The Resurrection) - Mahler, G - Harper, P
One of the most life-affirming pieces of music ever composed, Mahler's 2nd Symphony, subtitled 'The Resurrection', was first performed in Berlin in 1895. Mahler's interest in the mysteries of the afterlife is well-known and is a recurring theme throughout all his nine symphonies. Philip Harper has arranged the final passages of the 2nd Symphony, which begins with a profound hymn set to the words of Friedrich Klopstock-- 'Rise again, yea, thou shalt rise again'.The music contains one of Mahler's magical transitionary passages, building in intensity, before the hymn is restated in all its majesty at the moment of glorious resurrection. The initial fanfare is abruptly interrupted by a pulsating, faster tempo, driven by powerful drum beats and orchestral rhythms. Following this, the first four notes of the fanfare resound in various variations. Each instrument section has its glorious moment and contributes collectively to the impressive finale.

The married couple were the resident act at the Chapman Park Hotel in Los Angeles at the moment.A1977 recording by the Manhattan Transfer was an international hit, reaching no 1 in the UK Singles Chart and in Australia. The recording sold 1,8 million albums in Europe alone. Many artists worldwide has recorded Chanson d'amour in Englishand in native languages.

Commissioned by Manger School Band and their conductor (at that time) Bj?rn Sagstad in 1990. He wanted a calm, slow piece of music. Nocturne means 'night music'. It does not reflect a particular dream, but the feeling you get when you?re day-dreaming: you are in the middle of beeing awake and asleep. Geschreven in opdracht van Manger School Band en hun dirigent (op dat moment) Bj?rn Sagstad in 1990. Hij wilde een rustig, langzaam stuk muziek. Nocturne betekent 'nacht muziek'. Het gaat dus niet een bepaalde droom, maar het gevoel dat je krijgt wanneer je aan het dagdromen bent: je bent in het midden van wakker zijn en slapen.
