Banana Island is an extraordinary fictional place: coconut palms, date palms, mango trees, banana trees and mangroves grow in abundance. Animals live there in heavenly harmony. On a Caribbean danse rhythm, the Soca, several themes develop and create a dialogue between the various registers. A central section offers the cornet and trombone the chance to display their soloist skills. This work is full of energy and brimming over with enthusiasm! This music forms part of the musical tale La Malediction d'Aragne (Aragne's Curse), written by Dominique Schweizer and commissioned by the Lyre de Courtion (dir. Written in three movements without a break, this work was inspired by melodies of a popular nature. The first movement features two opposing modal melodies: one is very bright and lively, the other dark and tuneful. Various motifs are developed to offer highly contrasting musical events. The second movement is very peaceful, with a melody resembling a lullaby. To conclude the piece, the last movement delivers a festive dance with a swing feel. Commissioned by the Swiss Music Association, this very accessible work is mostly intended for small ensembles or those with mixed instrumentation. Fanfare for an Occasion was written to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the founding of Anglo Music Press, the publishing company dedicated to the works of British composer, Philip Sparke. It is a bright and festive work in which the main theme starts on the tenor instruments of the band before appearing as canonical imitation by all sections in turn. A short, repeated bridge passage leads to a second theme on the horns that is taken up by the full band and leads back to a return of the main theme and a repeat of the second subject, which brings the fanfare to a brilliant close. Kevin Houben created with When the Lights Go Down, a wonderful chorale that can be a moment of reflection in any concert program. The resigned, magnificent melodies at the beginning of this composition slowly build up to a highlight with an increasing orchestration. The piece starts with a suggestive Adagio Meditativo, after which the main theme is immediately announced. A central bridge section takes the listener along through the different spheres at which the melodic and rhythmic drums embellish the chorale melodies. Thematic elements from the introduction brings the piece to a quiet and peaceful end. The sheer simplicity with which this work is written, makes it a resplendent, magnificent concert piece. Early African-American songs contain a wealth of human expression, based on a yearning for freedom and biblical deliverance. This rhapsodic work combines Spirituals and Blues as the composer visualises a Camp Meeting where ecstatic utterances and spontaneous solo outbursts occur. These eventually become disorderly and uncontrollable, leading to a frenzy and collapse. With order and calm resorted, the music leads to an exultant conclusion. Gypsy Dance was composed while the composer was living in Spain. He had been working with some gypsy musicians and was intrigued by the instinct and passion that they brought to their playing. The composer also had the opportunity to watch some modern flamenco dancing and wanted to capture some of the spirited essence of this art form. In writing the piece he used two main melodic ideas and rather than develop them, they are presented in different guises as the dance moves through various episodes and builds towards a fiery climax.

Other Lives is works perfectly for a competition but can also be programmed as concert work. The dark chords at the beginning of the piece are derived from Der Doppelganger, one of Franz Schubert's late songs. After a short development the music begins to accelerate and find its own shape, gradually moving away from the introduction. The entire first part, Rage, has an intensely agitated character. The ensuing Reflection turns back to the initial chord progression, before a series of interspersing solos explore time and space at a slower pace. After another musical surge, the music is brought close to silence and then gives way to the third part, Redemption. Here, a widely spaced sound field contains a remote allusion to another work by Schubert, Ruckblick. After this farewell, an abstract musical transformation triggers an emotional change, as the initial motifs are now presented in their inversed form in order to create a much brighter harmonic landscape. Moreover, in the last part of the piece, Renewal, the grim, tense atmosphere of the first part is transformed into a great energy.Duration: 18.00

A slow, bluesy solo for trombone with band accompanimentLike many people, I took the opportunity offered by the COVID lockdown in Spring of 2020 to sort through old paperwork. I discovered a lot of songs that had not seen the light of day for many years and were mostly written with just the melody and chord symbols. Some offered the potential of becoming instrumental solos with a combination of heart-on-the-sleeve melodies the like of which I would not write now, together with maybe a greater sophistication in the instrumental writing. I had the notion in the back of my mind that Do you recall?; would work as a trombone solo but it seemed to fight me all the way. However, once finished it has proved to appeal to trombonists and has already been recorded by Brett Baker. It is not intrinsically difficult but needs a sense of the appropriate slow swing style and good control throughout the range.- Rob WiffinDuration: 4.15

This three-movement work by the Swiss composer Etienne Crausaz reflects three true stories and fascinating legends from the Middle Ages. The first movement tells the dramatic story of the 'witch' Catherine 'Catillon' Repond (1662-1731). She was the last woman ever to be executed for sorcery. In the second movement, the famous court jester Girard Chalamala occupies centre stage. This jester, the last one at the castle of Count Greyerz, could make everyone laugh. The third movement tells the story of Count Michael. He went down in history as a spendthrift bon-vivant. His burden of debt became so high that he did a moonlight flit and never came back! I Shall Love But Thee is an occasional work in the literal sense of the word, since it was originally written on the occasion of the composer's youngest son's wedding. The texts, by William Shakespeare, inspired Jan Van der Roost to compose profound and appealing music, largely in the style of Henry Purcell (in the first part) and Georg Friedrich Handel (in the second part)--although no literal quotations have been used.
