This short, light-hearted solo has been described as The Salvation Army's answer to 'The flight of the bumble bee' and requires facility from the soloist and accurate accompaniment from the band. The solo opens and closes with whimsical references to Erik Leidzen's famous euphonium solo 'The Song of the Brother' and includes the tunes 'A robe of white' and 'I'll serve Thee'.

£44.95Judd: Fantasia on 'Glory to His Name' - Dudley Bright
This Fantasia is a celebration of the work of Ray Steadman-Allen. Through most of his 92 years, his music has had a profound and wide-ranging impact on Salvation Army music. Always innovative, rather than stylistically stereotypical, his music has led the way forward for Salvationist composers. As the title suggests, his light-hearted 1960's vocal solo provides thematic material and highlights his motivation. There are also references to and quotations from several more of his pieces. Yet, although much of his music can be challenging, he has also given us music that speaks directly to the heart. His much-loved songs 'He giveth more grace' ('Blacklands') and 'Remember Me' are heard in humble and sincere tribute to a life dedicated to giving the glory to God through his music.

This solo was written at the request of Stephen Cobb and was premiered by Derick Kane with The International Staff Band of The Salvation Army in 1999. It subsequently became the title track of the solo CD recorded by the same forces. The theme, commonly known as 'Lord of the Dance', is followed by four variations (waltz, soft shoe, brillante, lento) and a blistering finale! A piano accompaniment version is included in The Derick Kane Euphonium Album.

In writing this piece I set out to emulate the sound of the Stan Kenton big band and music of that 'golden' era. The piece itself is based around two Salvation Army tunes that are associated with the word, 'salvation'; Steadily forward march! (T.B. 799) and Hark, hark, my soul (T.B.542).The music is intentionally flamboyant and requires a secure grasp of the style and rhythm to be successful. This composition was awarded first prize in the Theme and Variations Section of the 1926 Salvation Army Band Music Competition and has remained popular with cornet soloists and audiences ever since. This was the first in a trilogy of cornet solos with the word 'day' in the title written by Erik Leidzen, the others being 'Happy all the Day' and 'Wondrous Day'.
