Nightlights was commissioned by Chris Jeans and Don Collins for Youth Brass 2000, to be used as part of their programme at the 2019 European Championships. Written during January 2019, Nightlights received its world premiere by Youth Brass 2000, conducted by Chris Jeans with Siobhan Bates as soloist, at the 2019 European Brass Band Championships in Montreux, Switzerland.Originally written as a Tenor Horn solo, this version for Tuba was arranged for and is dedicated to Dr Joanna Ross Hersey.Nightlights is intended to illustrate a winter's evening looking out across Lake Geneva from Montreux. Tiny lights appear beneath the mountains from faraway homes and vehicles, flickering in the distance and shimmering in the reflections on the water. Tiny, blinking nightlights against the inky blue of the clear sky. Thousands of stars shine above, blurring the boundaries between land, water, and the heavens into a sparkling ether. Transfixed, the bustle of sounds and lights from Montreux seems a lot further away than it is in reality. Eventually, each little light blinks out, one at a time, leaving the chill of the cold night air and an empty sky.Duration: 4.30

Concert OvertureThis work was commissioned in 1970 for a brass band championship sponsored by WD and HO Wills, whose slogan was The Pacemakers. The title was added after the work was finished and has nothing to do with the content or character of the piece which, as Paul Hindmarsh remarks, is 'arguably the most satisfying in purely musical terms of all of Gregson's early compositions for band'.The Overture is cast in a sonata form exposition, with a slow central section, giving the opportunity for expressive cornet and euphonium solos. The final section begins with a strict fugal exposition which leads to a recapitulation of the opening material and a powerful climax built on the opening pyramid of fifths, which remains unresolved.Duration: 11:00

A festive, musical cocktail by Tim Paton for brass band, bringing together a folk-feel dance motif and a familiar carol, to create the atmosphere of a village celebration.Opening with a lively Jig, where the music joyfully dances around the band, the piece then settles to offer the tranquility of Gustav Holst's beautiful melody In the Bleak Mid-Winter.This peacefulness is soon overtaken by the reintroduction of the dance motif, finishing off the musical celebration with the dance and the carol mingling together.A very nice addition to Christmas repertoire, presenting a little bit of tradition amidst some lovely, imaginative scoring.Also available for concert band.

This is a beautiful hymn setting arranged for brass band by Steve Robson, inspired by the words of Charles Oakley (1832-1865), set to the melody of Little Cornard by Martin Shaw (1875-1958).Steve writes: The words of the opening line of the Hymn have added significance for me, in that I am fortunate to live high amongst England's most northerly hills, "The North Pennines".A strikingly beautiful melody which has been artfully scored by Steve to create waves of emotion throughout. Composed by Steve Robson specifically for the Flexi-Collection World Tour Series. This piece is a tribute to the children still affected by the 1986 Chernobyl Nuclear disaster. Chernigov is an area, originally part of the USSR, now Ukraine, originally inhabited by Cossack tribes. This piece is a "Cossack Dance", which starts slowly in a minor key, and then shifts to the tonic major for a lively dance.The Children of Chernigov is part of the Flexi-Collection World Tour Series.Look and Listen (courtesy of Ushaw's Youth Brass Concert - World Tour 2019):Our Flexi-Collection Series:Flexible scoring tailored to your needs - a perfect solution for expanding the repertoire of Junior/Youth brass bands and ensembles. Inspired by this wonder of the world, the piece embraces the Chinese style of music which often uses the pentatonic scale. It's a sequence which is something quite unusual to our ears in the western world and can be quickly demonstrated by playing only the black notes on the piano.
