£40.00Fugal Overture - Gustav Holst arr. Phillip Littlemore
Holst began composing his Fugal Overture in the late summer of 1922 after a holiday in Derbyshire and the full score was completed on 4th January 1923. The first performance was at the Royal Opera House the following May, where it preceded the first performance of Holst's opera, The Perfect Fool. The first concert performance on 11th October that same year at the Queen's Hall with Holst conducting.Despite its name, the overture is not strictly fugal. The fugal subject is full of spiky cross-rhythms first introduced in the basses, with the upper parts persisting with a pentatonic chord. The headlong pace slackens for a central interlude, introduced by the solo horn solo. However the festivities soon return driving headlong towards its conclusion.

Christmas Jig (The Tobique) | trad arr. David Stowell
Played by the fabulous Cory Band in their 2016 Christmas series, this lively piece is a real audience pleaser. It brightens up a Christmas concert and is an arrangement of two dances; Christmas jig, in 6/8 time, and a reel in 4/4, based on the traditional French Canadian folk song; 'The Mouth of the Tobique'.The basses have a vital role in creating a Celtic style drone sound, and the percussion a simple but effective Irish rhythm. Dardanella | Bernard & Black arr. Dario Salvi
'Oh Sweet Dardanella, I love your harem eyes. I'm a lucky fellow, to capture such a prize'Dardanella was written in 1919 and became one of the most popular songs of the 1920's selling 13 million copies, going on to become a huge jazz standard covered by the likes of Louis Armstrong and Bing Crosby amongst others.This arrangement for Brass Band by Dario Salvi takes us back to the most famous version of 1920 sung by Vernon Dalhart and Gladys Rice, where the opening calls to mind the sounds of a fairground.Dario's arrangement moves between styles with an almost clockwork sound at one point changing to laid back swing beat at another, all supporting this cheerful melody. Koanga is the hero of the opera, an African prince and voodoo priest stolen away and now working as a slave on a Mississippi plantation who falls in love with a fellow slave; Palmyra.This piece is a faithful arrangement of Delius's masterpiece for Brass Band, and features a well loved and catchy lyrical theme. KING OF HEAVEN (Brass Band Set) - Kenneth Downie
Based on the well-known hymn 'Praise my soul, the King of Heaven', this composition was specially written for The International Staff Band. A veritable showcase for the brass band, featuring each section in turn (cornets, horns and baritones, trombones, euphoniums and basses, percussion), the music concludes with an exciting and dramatic presentation of the theme.
