    Variants on an English Hymn Tune - Philip Sparke

    This set of variations on the well-known hymn tune Holy, holy, holy! will make a most satisfying addition to the solo repertoire for euphonuim and brass band. It is in the traditional air varie form with an introduction, theme and 3 variations. The original melody (known as Nicaea) was composed by John Bacchus Dykes' especially for Reginald Heber's renowned hymn of praise and became universally popular when it was included in Hymns Ancient and Modern in 1861. A beautiful solo that will test the soloists ability to show true emotion.

This magical three-verse setting for SATB Choir, Piano and Brass Quintet of the beautiful Canadian Christmas hymn The Huron Carol was commissioned by Jeff Hunt and the St Charles Singers and Millar Brass Quintet for their Christmas concert series in 2023. The original hymn is actually Canada's oldest Christmas song, also known as 'Twas in the Moon of Wintertime. Various versions of this setting are available from this website, including SATB Choir with Piano, as well as full versions for Brass Band, Concert Band, Full Orchestra and String Orchestra. All versions are set in the same key and so could be used as accompaniments to this particular version.     Complete score and full set of parts for Philip Sparke's Suite From Hymn To The Highlands for Brass Band. This work draws three expressive musical pictures of the Scottish highlands. The first movement, Ardross Castle, contains solo passages for horn and baritone and features a fascinating bagpipe melody. The second movement, Alladale, is a trio for tenor horn, flugel horn and baritone with an accompaniment featuring the percussion section. The final movement, Dundonnell,features two highly contrasting melodies, a wild presto and the bagpipe melody first heard in the first movement.

There are four movements: 'Towers and Chimneys' which is both heraldic and mysterious; 'Churches: Lord of the Dance' is an arrangement of the famous shaker melody made popular in Martin Shaw's hymn of Jesus' life and history; 'Pastorale: Sunday Afternoon recalls those long and languorous days before television, and 'Coronation Day Parade' - a community celebration with a brass band at its centre.
