The piece was written by John Wright Tidswell and performed during Enderby Jackson's series of brass band events which took place at the Crystal Palace, London 1860 - 1863. Enderby Jackson was the organiser of these historically important occasions and also conducted the massed band concerts.The purpose of this scholarly edition is to produce a performing version, clearing ambiguities and errors, that can be enjoyed by today's performers and listeners, bearing in mind the original function and context. At the same time the edition is an analytical, musicological study of one of the rare treasures of the brass band repertory.

£45.00Cuban Overture - George Gershwin arr. Phillip Littlemore
Originally entitled Rumba, the Cuban Overture was a was written some time following a two-week holiday which Gershwin took in Havana in February 1932. The overture is dominated by Caribbean rhythms and Cuban native percussion, with a wide spectrum of instrumental colour and technique. It is a rich and exciting work with complexity and sophistication, illustrating the influence of Cuban music and dance. Although it received it's premiere under the title Rumba, it was renamed Cuban Overture three months later at a benefit concert conducted by Gershwin at the Metropolitan Opera to avoid giving audience the idea that it was simply a novelty item. £35.00Pomp & CIrcumstance March No.1 - Edward Elgar arr. Phillip Littlemore
Elgar's Pomp & Circumstance March No. 1 was completed in July 1901 although the 'big tune' actually dates from earlier in that same year. It was premiered in Liverpool by its dedicatees, the Liverpool Orchestral Society, on the 19th October. It was repeated in London a few days later by Henry Wood at the Promenade concerts and the result was sensational, the audience roared its applause, and refused to allow the concert to continue. In order to restore order, Wood conducted the march three times - the only time in the history of the Promenade concerts that an orchestral item was accorded a double encore in Wood's lifetime.Now a staple of the 'Last Night of the Proms', where it always manages a partial encore, and a fitting item for any such themed concerts. The successful songwriting team of Hugh Martin and Ralph Blane wrote Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas for the 1944 MGM musical Meet Me in St. Louis, where it was introduced by Judy Garland.The original lyrics were too melancholic and Garland asked for something a little bit more upbeat instead. Blane substituted them to the now-familiar lyrics of those Garland sang in the movie, although Frank Sinatra asked for one further change so that the song could be included on his album The Joy Of Christmas. At a time when we are being encouraged to survey the recent past, its title aims to catch a flavour of that spirit of optimistic vision which coloured the British psyche at the end of the Second War, at once heroic, elegiac, and confident. The concerto's three movements are arranged in a circular pattern around a reflective slow movement. At the heart of that movement is a Cadenza, marked to be played off-stage, where the soloist is surrounded and supported by an additional group of fanfare players. By contrast, the outer movements are energetic and brisk, at times heroic, and at times virtuosic. Also available with piano accompaniment.

When a Knight Won His Spurs - Traditional - Thomas, B
Many people of a certain age will be familiar with When a Knight won his Spurs. A God-fearing Knight battling fearsome dragons and ogres really sticks in the memory, along with the fabulous folk tune.Prefaced by a mysterious opening derived from the melody itself, the tune appears a further three times, linked by a glittering fanfare. The folk feel of the original tune has been retained, and the piece drives along using a dual 3/4 - 6/8 time signature. The first statement of the tune is a conventional harmonisation; the second statement uses more colourful harmonies, and the triumphal final statement follows a dramatic upward key change. Deep River is a spiritual of Afro-American origin. It was used in the 1929 film version of "Showboat". The melody is also sung in the closing section of Michael Tippett's oratorio "A Child of our Time" and was also adapted into the popular song "Dear Old Southland". Sing Praise - Geert Jan Kroon
Sing praise is an upbeat opener or concert piece that is based on the Old Hundredth. It was a commission by Flevo Brass Emmeloord to praise the conductor/teacher Klaas de Jong. I know Klaas as a high-spirited teacher who always devotes his time to guiding young players and developing music ensembles by investing in youth bands and music education. The title is a reference to the hymn tune Old Hundredth and a message to ensembles to sing praise to teachers and youth.
