£74.95Connotations (Brass Band - Score and Parts) - Gregson, Edward
Connotations was commissioned for the 1977 National Brass Band Championship finals, held in the Royal Albert Hall, London (the winner, incidentally, of that particular competition was the famous Black Dyke Mills Band).At the age of 32 Gregson was the youngest composer to have received the honour of such a commission. It came at the end of a productive five years writing for the brass band publisher R Smith. Some of those works - The Plantagenets, Essay and Patterns for example, with their direct and tuneful style, have remained popular with brass bands the world over.For Gregson, these were the means by which he sharpened the tools of his trade, preparing the ground, as it were, for his finest work to date - Connotations. He thought of calling the piece Variations on a Fourth, but with due deference to Gilbert Vinter perhaps (Variations on a Ninth), he chose a more appropriate one. As Gregson has written, 'Connotations suggests more than one way of looking at something, an idea, and this is exactly what the piece is about'.Writing a competition piece brought its own problems. 'It has to be technically difficult and yet musically satisfying. I didn't like being kept to an eleven-minute maximum. The inclusion of short cadenzas for less usual solo instruments seems to signify a certain test-piece mentality'.Gregson solved the problems admirably by adopting a symphonic approach to variation form: Introduction - fanfares, a call to attention, in effect Variation 1; Theme - a six-note motif, given a lyrical and restrained first statement; Variation 2 - a delicate toccata; Variation 3 - typically robust in melody and rhythm; Variation 4 - lyrical solos; Variation 5 - a scherzo; Variation 6 - cadenzas; Variations 7-9 - an introduction, fugato and resounding restatement of the theme.Duration: 10.30

This piece embraces the sounds and imagery of a tribal group out singing on a remote hill top, where individuals sing out a 2 bar phrase and the remainder of their group sing a response. African Dawn brings this vision to life by giving the opportunity for the musicians playing the original "Chant" or "Call" to be positioned as soloists, or just stand up within the main group.There is also the opportunity for lots of percussion to be spread throughout the band and divided into groups, or even groups of people clapping the separate rhythms to bring forth the African atmosphere.African Dawn is part of the Flexi-Collection - World Tour Series.Our Flexi-Collection Series:Flexible scoring tailored to your needs - a perfect solution for expanding the repertoire of Junior/Youth brass bands and ensembles. This beautiful piece written by John Ireland, with words by Robert Bridges, has now been reborn.Originally commissioned by the National Coal Board in 1947 it is believed to have been performed on May 1st 1948 at the the Haringey Stadium, involving 9 bands and 8 colliery bands. Since the original brass band parts (which bring the piece to life in its full glory) were lost over time, the John Ireland Trust committed to a project to ensure the music was not lost forever.Andrew Duncan was commissioned with the honour of recreating the brass band set to bring the full performance of band and choir back to the public's enjoyment. £113.00Me and Mrs. Jones - Kenneth Gamble
Me and Mrs. Jones was written by Kenny Gamble, Leon Huff and Cary Gilbert in 1972, and was first recorded by Billy Paul on the album 360 Degrees of Billy Paul. The song is about a man who has an affair with Mrs. Jones, and how the two secretly meet every day in the same cafe, even though they may know it's not quite right: "We got a thing going on/we both know that it's wrong/but it's much too strong/to let it go now." Paul has stated that he was sure the song was going to be a hit even before it was released, as "it's a song everyone can relate to", but already from the start the lyrics were considered somewhat controversial and the song were banned from several radio stations. Nevertheless, it became one of the best-selling singles of 1972 and Paul received a Grammy for Best Male R&B Vocal Performance.Well known is also Michael Buble's version of the song, released on the album Call Me Irresponsible in 2007. It is his version that has been the inspiration for this arrangement, which brings out even more of the jazz elements Buble has found in the song. The arrangement is quite demanding for the ensemble, and requires great rhythmic precision in particular.

During their childhood, some people have the tradition to put their toys, drawings and wishes for the future into a timebox that they bury somewhere to dig up when they are adults. This has inspired Gauthier Dupertuis for the title of this work: Postcards from tomorrow. What wishes would we put in those boxes for the future; what kind of postcards would we send to our grandchildren? To compose this work, Gauthier Dupertuis was also inspired by three pictures that have some symbolic meaning linked to the question above and that give the names to the three movements that make up this piece.The first movement, Abandoned Blockhouses, refers to war and other horrors in the history of humanity, while Pagoda at the Lake, the second movement, was inspired by the pagoda, a religious building whose function is to house the relics of holy people in Asian worship. The third and last movement, Building Bridges, is a call for hope. In July 221, Postcards from Tomorrow was awarded the first prize at the "La Bacchetta d'Oro" international composition contest in Italy.

This march was commissioned by The office of cultural affairs in Fana and Ytrebygda (a part of Bergen Municipality) for the opening of The Bergen Light Rail.The premiere was given by The Norwegian Navy Band Bergen and Smoras skolemusikkduring the light rails maiden voyage. Her Majesty Queen Sonja of Norway opened the light rail on June 22nd 2010.My idea was to give the march a strong link to Bergen. In the bass solo (letter B) I have quoted Bergens "national"anthem Nystemtn and in the Trio (letter E) I have used a bugle call from Bergens unique tradition of archerchery brigades. The first part of the march is meant to have a sort of train feel to it; somethingthats moving steadily through thestreets of the city.

Aurora Borealis - Morten J. Wallin
Aurora Borealis, more popularly known as the Northern Lights, was a source of superstition in the Middle Ages. This dazzling spectacle, which is accompanied by whispering sounds, put the fear of God into those who didn't know that this was simply one of nature's grand shows. Many heathen attributed the phenomenon to the incomprehensible ways of the gods. Today we know better. Every 11 years, the amount of particles emitted by the sun is at its highest level, as is the case this year. These particles are hurled away from the sun, beyond its magnetic field. A small percentage of these particles are able to penetrate the earth's atmosphere. Once they are here, they begin tocollide and form the beautiful patterns in the night sky which we call the Aurora Borealis.
