Reflections of Freedom depicts the emotions and feelings of the many migrant farmers who left 19th Century Scotland to set up home and begin a new life in the 'New World'. In particular, the joys experienced on the reaping of their first harvest.Use is made of the American folk tune, Bringing in the Sheaves. Written for the US Army Brass Band in Washington DC and premiered by them in 1997.'Reflections of Freedom' was the title track on the Whitburn Band CD of the same name, recorded in 24.

An exciting solo, commissioned by cornet virtuoso Mark Wilkinson, and composed by Lucy Pankhurst.The piece is featured on Mark's solo CD - Milestone (released in 2013). Whilst the originally recorded solo is appropriately challenging to fully display Mark's versatility and technical prowess, an alternative solo part is also included which offers a more comfortable range for performance.It features a strong driving rock beat and uses some great optional effects (including an echo cornet), to produce an extremely refreshing new addition to the advanced cornet soloist's repertoire.A wonderful piece, composed by one of today's leading composers for one of today's foremost cornet players - a fine combination which is now available to cornet players around the world.

Dragons' Rise was commissioned by the Tredegar Town Band in July 2008 for their CD recording Spirit of the Valleys, to represent the band beginning their resurrection from a difficult time in the bands history back through to becoming on of the best bands in the world. It was premiered by the Tredegar Town Band at the National Eisteddfod contest in Cardiff in August 2008, performed live on national television, where the band were victorious.Dragons' Rise was the first piece composed by Matthew as the bands new composer-in-residence. Subsequent pieces have included Legends of Cyfarthfa and Nightingale Dances, both winners of the Cyril Beere award for Best New Composition at Brass in Concert, The Smile and Activate.

Dial M for Midnight - Matthew Hall
Dial M for Midnight is a jazz-based solo for aspiring and accomplished cornet players alike. Technically not particularly demanding yet quite complicated rhythmically, Dial M allows players young and old to stand up and show off their skills in a work which has it's roots in Latin America but travels through the late night smoke-filled jazz clubs along the way. Commissioned by Jim Hayes for his debut CD recording, Dial M is the title track. Nicknamed Jimmy Midnight, Jim Hayes has established himself as one of the leading cornet players in the world playing within the Scottish Co-Op Band. Dial M is a take on Jim's persona and his love of jazz, the culmination of which ends up as a witty pastiche signature track of all things James Bond to Perry Mason.

2013 Finals of the National Brass Band Championships of Great Britain - 3rd SectioTo some, the tragic story of the Penlee lifeboat, Solomon Browne, would need no introduction, and to some the pain felt is still very much a reality. The composer, born just a few weeks before that fateful night on the 19th December 1981, has created this work as a musical homage to the bravery of the souls who lost their lives and has dedicated it to their memory.Penlee was commissioned by the Cornwall Youth Brass Band using funds bequeathed by Michael Pickett. The first performance was given by the Cornish Youth Brass Band, conducted by Ian Porthouse, at St. Michael's Church, Newquay, on 30th December 2008.Penlee has been voted into the Classic FM Hall of Fame 2011 at No.106. The Dreaded Groove and Hook is an up-tempo acid-jazz number that draws inspiration from bands like Jamiroquai and The Youngblood Brass Band. The groove in question is the main tune that is shared round the band, whilst the hook, in 'pop' terms, is the catchy bit of the song. The whole band joins in to play a huge 'riff' that acts as a chorus to the jazz-like verses.The piece was commissioned by Jason Katsikaris and The Leyland Band, who gave the first performance as part of their programme for the Brass in Concert Championships, held at The Sage, Gateshead on the 16th November 2008.
