Dreams of America was commissioned by the National Youth Brass Band of America. The concept of the 'American Dream' is an indelible part of the American psyche. Over time, notions of success, fame, and fortune have become synonymous with this idea. Some have achieved their personal 'American Dreams', and yet for others they often remain only a dream. Dreams of America takes a look at certain, generalised aspects of the 'American Dream' and pits them against the harsh realities faced by many, both in the past and present. To heighten these dichotomies, each movement is accompanied by a slideshow of historic and modern images related to the issues at hand. Movement 1: Yearning to Breathe Free explores the anger, fear, and subjugation that seems rampant in recent years, but has been present throughout the country's founding. Movement 2: Take my Stand looks at the role that change, protest, and equality has had and continues to have in our society. Movement 3: It Beckons and Beckons examines the beauty of nature and our role in preserving and protecting this country's natural wonders while illustrating the ease of which our environment can be ruined and destroyed. Movement 4: Sweet Land of Liberty reflects onthe composer's interpretation at what truly makes the United States of America a great country - the people who call this place home. £40.00Chorale Prelude
This stately work is very loosely based on the opening chords from 'The Lamb', although there are no direct quotations from that work. The opening chorale is played as gradually more themes are added above in a dignified and legato subject where instruments sustain notes to give a lingering echo effect. Players need to be aware of their role in this to maximise the effect. The second subject increases the intensity until the time signature change introduces a second chorale. Then, a short imitative passage leads to a rising appogiatura theme and the climax of the work, which re-introduces the original chorale in a major tonality. With versions for brass ensemble, brass band, wind orchestra and woodwind orchestra, this work has been placed in concerts when a meaningful, reflective moment is required.

A piece for brass band featuring the soprano cornet. Slow and solemn, yet dignified and graceful, this allows the soloist to shine in front of the whole brass band. The band stays in the background for just about the whole piece, coming slightly to the fore in the more turbulent middle section. Lasting 4'30" a nice change of pace for a concert.

DURATION: 3 minutes. DIFFICULTY: Championship. "Trumpets sound in the Abbey, bells ring out, & a 62-gun salute booms from the Tower of London.". 'The Crowning' is a ceremonial fanfare and chorale based upon the hymn tune 'Westminster', the London Abbey in which coronations and subsequent 'crownings' take place at the change of every Monarch. You will hear 62 bass drum strikes in the intrada representing the 62 gun-salute which accompanies the ceremony as the 'trumpets sound and bells ring out in the Abbey'. .

Composed for Strata Brass in 2020 as part of their COVID-19 induced, virtually recorded 'A Christmas Carol' (a new suite for brass bandlasting around 30 minutes in total), 'The Ghost of Christmas Present' is a sorrowful and reflective solo for Tenor Horn depicting the visions shown by the Ghost of Christmas Present to Scrooge as he sleeps on Christmas eve. Lonely, cold and disliked, Scrooge begins to see how he is viewed by others and realises how he must change his ways. .

DescriptionLuigi Boccherini was born in Lucca, Italy, into a musical family. His father, a cellist and double-bass player, sent him to study in Rome at a young age. In 1757 they both went to Vienna, where the court employed them as musicians in the Burgtheater. In 1761 Boccherini went to Madrid, entering the employ of Prince Luis Antonio of Spain, younger brother of King Charles III. There he flourished under royal patronage, until one day when the King expressed his disapproval at a passage in a new trio, and ordered Boccherini to change it. The composer, no doubt irritated with this intrusion into his art, doubled the passage instead, which led to his immediate dismissal. Then he accompanied Don Luis to Arenas de San Pedro, a little town in the Gredos mountains, where Boccherini wrote many of his most famous works. Although neglected after his death and throughout the 19th and early 20th century (he was known mockingly as 'Haydn's Wife' for a time), Boccherini's music has been rediscovered in recent decades.La Musica Notturna delle Strade di Madrid('Night Music of the Streets of Madrid') is a string quintet of seven short movements composed during Boccherini's exile in Arenas, no doubt to remind him and his prince of happier times. The music is reminiscent of "the gaiety and bustle of Spain's capital, recalling the sound of the city's church bells ringing for evening prayer, the popular dances that were the delight of its young people, and the blind beggars singing their typical songs".
