Jacob de Haan wrote this arrangement for concert band, fanfare band and brass band and optional male voice choir. The original carol was written by the Austrian composer and organist Franz Gruber (1787-1863). He was asked to write Silent Night) on the 24th of December 1818 by the priest of the Church of St. Nicolas in Oberndorf, who had himself written the text. It is a romantic carol, with nuances of contemporary Austrian folk and Italian pastorale music.

A Scottish Hymn - Charles Hutcheson
A Scottish Hymn is a chorale arrangement of a hymn composed by Charles Hutcheson, a Scottish merchant and amateur composer who lived from 1792 to 1860. This hymn was given the title "Stracathro," a typical Scottish name after a town in the district Angus. The melody is used with various hymn texts in the Scottish church.

Missa Brevis is a major work for choir and brass band for performance in church or in the concert hall. For this mass, there are many performance possibilities depending on the musicians available. In addition to the standard orchestration of choir and band a brass quartet can also play the choral parts. For this it is desirable for the brass quartet to be positioned separately from the rest of the band (on a gallery, for example), so that the idea of two choirs is heard. The sisters Ruth, Anita and June Pointer from West Oakland in California learned how to sing in the sixties in church where their father was a minister. At the beginning of the 1970s they entered the music business, where they proved to have a mastery of many styles - including rhythm & blues, jazz, and country. However, the Pointer Sisters acquired international fame at the beginning of the eighties with their soul-like pop music. A great hit was the up-tempo number I'm So Excited, which is still a success on every dance floor. This sparkling arrangement by Peter Kleine Schaars certainly provides the excitement that is suggested in the title.

Ave Verum Corpus - Edward Elgar
Edward Elgar (1857-1934) originally composed this work in 1887, as a Pie Jesu, when he was an organist in the St George's Church in Worcester. Years later, in 1902, he transformed the Pie Jesu into an Ave Verum for soprano and tenor solo, mixed choir and organ. This excellent arrangement was created by Robert van Beringen and skilfully retains the wonderful atmosphere of the original composition.

Jacob de Haan begins his arrangement of the well-known hymn Allein Gott in der Hoh' sei Ehr (All Glory Be to God on High) with a quotation from his own Missa Katharina, a mass for choir, soprano, and band. To this melody he sets the Latin text from the last part of the Gloria. The chorale is then heard after an interlude and can, at the director's discretion, be accompanied by the choir singing in either German or English. A perfect work for church concerts.

Cantique de Noel
The French composer Adolphe Charles Adam's (1803- 1856) carol Cantique de No l (better known in France as Minuit, Chretiens, and also widely known as O Holy Night) was initially criticised by church authorities who observed a lack of musical taste and the absence of religious perception. How wrong they were is now clear as the song is popular worldwide and is often performed in churches as well as carol concerts. Roland Kernen has produced this beautiful version of Cantique de Noel for brass band.

A talented church musician, Rowlands reputedly composed a large number of hymn tunes and anthems yet it is just this tune alone, Blaenwern, written in the early part of the 1900s that he is known for today.Commonly used as a setting for the hymn Love Divine, All Loves Excelling, it is one of the most popular choices for hymns selected for weddings and featured at number 5 in the BBC Songs of Praise 'Top 10 Hymns of All Time'; indeed it was chosen for the wedding of HRH Prince William and Catherine Middleton in 2011. Walking in Greendale - Bryan Daly - Len Jenkins
The composer Bryan Daly was responsible for the music in the original Postman Pat series, including its well-known signature tune. Tucked away in only one episode, (not the one about Pat learning to play a tuba), is the delightful piece "Walking in Greendale", which features a jolly tuba part. Bryan kindly gave permission for its arrangement for Tuba and Brass Band, and this was originally played by Graham Cooper in The Woburn Sands 'B' Band at Whaddon Church Fete (one branch of Graham's family comes from Whaddon, in Buckinghamshire). The piece is ideal for fetes, concerts and similar engagements. Sadly, Bryan Daly died in January 2012, but with the agreement of his son, Robert, this revised arrangement is dedicated to his memory.

The Crown of Roses - Tchaikovsky - Len Jenkins
Tchaikovsky wrote this in his 'Songs for Young People' in Moscow in 1883 to words by Pletchtcheev. The story it tells is about Jesus Christ when he was a young child, having a small wild garden in which roses grew. Passing children saw the roses and plucking them mockingly asked if he wove rose garlands in his hair. Christ says to take the roses, but to leave the thorns. Instead, they make a crown of these and forced it onto his head so that it bleeds, symbolic of what was going to happen later in his lifetime. The melody contains all the passion that we associate with Russian church music and is equally suitable for a contemplative Christmas or Passiontide. This arrangement is faithful to the four verses of the original lyrics, but with an optional ending half-way if preferred.
