For Free Mind, a light and dynamic piece, Marc Jeanbourquin drew inspiration from a gospel song, namely "Oh, Freedom", a post-Civil War African-American freedom song. In these times of crisis, the composer wanted to retain a positive and energetic spirit to symbolise the hope for better days. The four notes of the theme "Oh, Freedom" occur throughout the work and are brightened up by lively percussions, giving Free Mind a sparkling character that will lift the opening of a concert with enthusiasm. A Musical PortraitRedbad was written for the Championship Section of the Dutch Brass Band Championships, and thus it contains plenty of musical and technical challenges. In this work of seven connected movements we get to know Redbad, who was the King of the Frisians from c. 680 to 719. The composer drew his inspiration from historical information, but also from stories, anecdotes, myths and legends around this figure. The themes within the composition are closely interwoven whereas the music is varied and appealing, from heroic motifs to the melancholy of elegies. Impressive tutti passages alternate with fragments that sound more open and in which various players can take centre stage. To crown it all, the work concludes with a majestic finale.Duration: 17.45

Concertante Variations on an original theme after Pyotr Ilyich TchaikovskyJan de Haan drew inspiration for this work from five paintings exhibited in The Hermitage in Saint Petersburg, one of the largest and most versatile museums in the world. He used the melodious Andante cantabile from the String Quartet Op. 11 by the Russian composer Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky as its starting point. Fanfare for an Occasion was written to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the founding of Anglo Music Press, the publishing company dedicated to the works of British composer, Philip Sparke. It is a bright and festive work in which the main theme starts on the tenor instruments of the band before appearing as canonical imitation by all sections in turn. A short, repeated bridge passage leads to a second theme on the horns that is taken up by the full band and leads back to a return of the main theme and a repeat of the second subject, which brings the fanfare to a brilliant close. Jon Henrik Mario Fjallgren became instantly well-known after his appearance in Sweden's Got Talent where he performed Daniels Joik written for his recently passed best friend. Fjallgren was born in Cali, Columbia in 1987 but adopted by a Swedish Sami family and lives now as a reindeer herder, singer and composer. Johan de Meij's first symphony The Lord of the Rings is based on the trilogy of that name by J.R.R. Tolkien. This book has fascinated many millions of readers since its publication in 1955. The symphony consists of five separate movements, each illustrating a personage or an important episode from the book. This transcription for brass band has been arranged by the composer. The symphony was written in the period between March 1984 and December 1987, and had its premiere in Brussels on 15th March 1988, performed by the The Royal Band ofthe Belgian Guides under the baton of Norbert Nozy. In 1989, the symphony The Lord of the Rings was awarded a first prize in the Sudler International Wind Band Composition Competition in Chicago, and a year later, the symphony was awarded a grant by the Dutch Composers Fund. In 2001, the orchestral version was premiered by the Rotterdam Philharmonic Orchestra and recorded by the London Symphony Orchestra. Duration: 9.00
