Simon Dobson wrote his Four Sketches at the request of Peter Bossano, Head of Brass at the Royal College of Music, in recognition of the 25th anniversary of Benjamin Britten's death. It was the winning entry in the European Brass Band Composer Competition in 2002. Suitable for 1st Section Bands and above. Duration: 10.00

It's Alright - Mike Moran - Len Jenkins
"It's Alright", the theme song for the BBC TV series New Tricks, was written by Mike Moran, whose credits also include composing the song "Barcelona" for Freddy Mercury, the theme to the UK crime series 'Taggart' and the Lynsey de Paul entry to the Eurovision Song Contest. As a producer, he has worked on The Queen Album and Elaine Paige's Piaf. New Tricks follows New Scotland Yard's mythical Unsolved Crime and Open Case Squad, which is staffed by retired police officers who have been recruited to look into unsolved crimes, including murders. Whilst this particular squad is fictitious, the concept is based firmly on fact. Although New Tricks does have serious plots, the series also contains a fair amount of humour, usually revolving around in-house banter, and the lyrics to Mike Moran's song does it justice. Dennis Waterman, who played Gerry Standing, one of the team, was the obvious choice of vocalist, although the song was never released commercially. Sadly Dennis died in May 2022.

The group Teach-In, from the Netherlands, won the Eurovision Song Contest in 1975 with the song Ding-a-Dong. It was the fourth time that a Dutch entry had won the prestigious festival but since then no Dutch artist has even come near first place again. The original Ding-a-Dong was performed, in keeping with tradition, with the accompaniment of a large orchestra. This sparkling arrangement of the catchy song provides a cheerful note in every concert. The melody will certainly stay in the audience's memory long after the performance.Duration: 2:00

Jacob de Haan's Introitus, in which he has arranged the hymns Puer natus est nobis and Lobt Gott, Ihr Christen alle gleich, is a wonderful introduction to the Christmas season and can be performed with any instrumental combination with mixed choir and organ ad libitum.Duration: 4:00

Romani Fire Dance is a short, virtuosic tour-deforce for brass band. Taking its influence from Balkan music, the piece heavily features the whole comet section and xylophone with flurried semiquaver work throughout. This composition was the winning entry of Flowers Band's 2012 composition contest and was premiered as part of its winning performance at the 2012 Butlins Mineworker's Championships. Since the work is quite difficult, it is suitable for 1st section bands upwards.
