The Green Hills of Tyrol (Euphonium Solo with Brass Band - Score and Parts) - Sparke, Philip
The Green Hills of Tyrol was commissioned by Jrena and Beat Knusel for their son, Swiss euphonium player Joel Knusel, to celebrate his 20th birthday in 2019. The request was for a piece suitable for use in a solo competition, possibly using a Scottish or Irish melody, and composer Philip Sparke suggested an old-fashioned air varie might be a suitable idea. The piece follows the well-established formula of a theme followed by four variations. The history of the original melody is fascinating and, although it is now well-known as a bagpipe tune, its background is Austrian or Italian, rather than Scottish. The tune appears as a chorus of Swiss soldiers in Rossini's 1829 opera William Tell but was possibly an existing Tyrolean folk tune. In 1854, during the Crimean War, Pipe Major John MacLeod of the 93rd Highlanders heard a band of the Sardinian contingent playing selections from the opera in camp before the Siege of Sebastopol. He was struck by the melody and arranged it for his pipers, calling it The Green Hills of Tyrol, referring to Tell's visit to that corner of Austria in the opera. It has since become universally popular among pipe bands who usually refer to it as A Scottish Soldier, following the addition of new lyrics in a 1961 hit by Andy Stewart.Duration: 5.45

March - The Green Island (Brass Band) Espen HaukAs
This march was written to mark the centennial jubilee of the renowed Manger Musikklag. The title for the piece comes from the many descriptions of the county Manger Musikklag originates from, on the island of Radoy. As the composer writes, 'It is a uniquely lush and beautiful landscape, which is echoed on the famously green trimmed jackets worn by the band at concerts and competitions. Radoy is not without reason called "the green island". With regards to the composition, I have not tried to reinvent the idea of a march. But rather to present my own take on its familiar style. The piece is meant to have a reassuring familiarity about it, whilst the ending will surely make the audience smile.' On the Castle Green
I was contacted by conductor and friend Desmond Graham who wanted to have a traditional concert march composed to celebrate the Golden Jubilee of his band; The Third Carrickfergus Band.Immediately my mind started wandering as I thought about all the great marches that I have enjoyed playing and listening to over the years. So when I put pen to paper I had already planned out the structure of the march and which instruments to feature. The march itself is split into two halves, the first in a minor key the second in a major key. The opening section starting loudly in F minor features stereotypical passages one would come to recognise in a traditional concert march: a cornet solo, a melodic bridging section and a robust bass solo led by the basses and trombones. The second half of the march changes pace and mood as it lifts into a major key giving it a more lighter feel. We hear a second cornet solo which plays the second theme of the march. After a second bridge section the theme is played by the front row cornets to allow the soprano to play an obligato melody similar to that heard in marches like "Army of the Nile" and "Stars and Stripes Forever". It all builds to a grandioso ending where the tempo drops and the final theme is played with a quick accel to the end.As for the title? In Carrickfergus lies an old castle that faces the town which is situated on a small plot of luscious green grass - "On The Castle Green".Paul Lovatt-Cooper

Procession of the Nobles | Rimsky-Korsakov arr. Alwyn Green (10)
An arrangement by Alwyn Green for 10 piece Brass ensemble, The Procession of the Nobles is the only familiar music from the Mlada Suite by Rimsky-Korsakov.The music bursts to life with a rousing flourish, soon followed by a noble processional tune. The music is full of colour and energy, with a beautiful melodic section, before the central vigorous section leads to a return to the march theme, and a rousing close. The Procession of the Nobles is played by Prince of Wales BrassInstrumentation1st Trumpet in Eb2nd Trumpet in Bb3rd Trumpet in BbFlugelhorn in BbHorn in F1st Trombone2nd TromboneBass TromboneEuphoniumTubaPercussion Parts (2):1. The Day Thou Gavest Lord, Is Ended | Ellerton arr. Alwyn Green
This beautiful hymn, masterfully arranged by Alwyn Green for 10 piece Brass Ensemble is thought to have been the work of Cheshire vicar John Ellerton who is said to have written it in 1870.It was used by Queen Victoria as the hymn for her Diamond Jubilee in 1897, but it was also sung a century later when Britain handed over the control of Hong Kong to China, closing a final chapter in the colonial story. It has been described as having a 'beautifully managed geographical progression and structure'.This arrangement has all the serenity and dignity of the original work.Instrumentation1st Trumpet (1)2nd Trumpet (1)3rd Trumpet (1)Flugelhorn (1)Horn in F (1)1st Trombone (1)2nd Trombone (1)Bass Trombone (1)Euphonium (4th Trombone) (1)Tuba (1)Percussion Parts (2):Timpani (1)Cymbal (1)ISMN: 979-0-708127-10-9

The Sorcerer's Apprentice | Dukas arr. Alwyn Green
Most of us are familiar with the symphonic poem written by 19th century composer, Paul Dukas, which was inspired by an 18th century poem by Goethe in which the sorcerer's apprentice, desiring to save himself some work attempts to try his hand at his masters craft when things go terribly wrong! This version, arranged by Alwyn Green for Brass Band, captures the spirit of the original masterpiece in a complex and challenging score for Brass Band. It has all the drama, and vibrant energy of the Dukas masterpiece, brilliantly orchestrated for Brass Band.Listen to the piece played by Foresters Brass 2000, from their CD : 'Heritage' which can be obtained from the band.Instrumentation: Soprano, Solo, Repiano, 2nd and 3rd CornetsFlugelhornSolo, 1st and 2nd Tenor Horns1st and 2nd Baritone1st, 2nd and Bass TromboneEuphoniumEb and Bb BassesPercussion parts (4):1: Timpani2: Cymbal3: Glockenspiel4: VibraphoneISMN: 979-0-708127-01-7
