3rd Section Test Piece 2016 National Finals of the British Brass Band Championship.The travels of the Aztec people as they headed south through North America looking for a new home, acted as the inspiration for Lake of the Moon. The composition contains small fragments of Oriental music and South American rhythms and occasionally, Russian Cossacks seem to raise their heads. The journey from North to South is not without danger, which is represented by threatening sounds within the music. In the Adagio divoto the composer takes us along to the Texcoco Lake, which the Aztecs called the lake of the moon. This loving and dreamlike work captures the undulating rhythm of a mother rocking her child to sleep. The piece was inspired by classic Rudyard Kipling: "Oh! Hush thee, my baby, the night is behind us, And black are the waters that sparkled so green. The moon, o'er the combers, looks downward to find us, At rest in the hollows that rustle between." Magical!

It utilises the energetic rhythmic elements of the western film genre made famous by the music of Aaron Copland, Elmer Bernstein and Jerome Moross. Look out for the homage to the movie "Big Country" in the repeat of the trio section, an idea suggested to me after sending the first daft to my old friend and mentor Major Denis Burton MBE, to who's guidance I will be forever grateful.

I had a dream of a moose that escapes captivity and heads towards the city. At first, he has a ball with all the new things to see but as he approaches the centre he gradually despairs at the chaos of the crowds of people and traffic. In the end he flees desperately out of the city and slams himself back into his cage. The piece is clearly a homage to Shostakovich and perhaps shouldn't be taken too seriously. Mark Hamlyn.

The Yellow Submarine - Lennon & McCartney - Catherall, A
The Beatles were at the height of their popularity when this zany cartoon was released in the 60s. The cartoon has become a collectors item now and the music doesn't sound at all dated. Yellow Submarine was the title track and featured their less talented drummer, Ringo Starr.Alan Catherall's fun arrangement was originally a concept piece arranged for the Liverpool Phil. The melody sits on top of a Souza type march and features lots of bells and whistles - lots of fun for both players and audience.3rd section +

The musical tells how the Spirit-led disciples established the church after Pentecostand this song appears as the disciples are imprisoned for preaching about Jesus. They are understandably worried but comfort each other by remindingthemselves of the apostle Paul's words to the Galatians; 'But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness,faithfulness, gentleness and self-control.' (Galatians 5:22-23)
