'Is That The Time' was written in 2014 for UK national award winning band 'Youth Brass 2000'. It's a showpiece in a jazzy fusion idiom with a full and central role for the kit drummer and percussionists. The temptation must be resisted to play the piece too quickly and in so doing losing the 16th note syncopations inherent within the rhythmic groove. The challenge is not so much one of getting the notes, although there are a few harmonic surprises along the way, as one of playing as a cohesive rhythmic unit. Duration: 4.30. Suitable for 1st Section Bands and above.

Ray Steadman-Allen was for many years the driving force in Salvation Army music. His publication list of both brass and vocal works can be measured literally by the hundred. 'The Lord is King' is arguably his crowning achievement of over twenty major works for brass band. Although described as a suite, the work is more symphonic in conception and scale as well as being formidable to perform. The work is based on the Welsh hymn tune 'Llangollen' to which the hymn 'The Lord is King, I own His power' are associated. The three movements derive inspiration from the lines 'My joy, my toil, my craftman's skill, all have their place, and serve His will' found in verse five of the hymn.

A View at the Zoo Brass Band (Score & Parts)
Everybody is familiar with the zoo. Remember all those animals? Big ones, small ones. Water dwellers, air-bound birds, long legged hoppers, creeping bugs. All animals seem to have their own peculiarities. Now, Carl Wittrock (who also composed the world-famous master piece 'Lord Tullamore') invites you to join him in a musical exploration of the animal kingdom. An invitation you must not reject! In his 'A view at the Zoo', Wittrock presents ten distinctly different animals as compositions of music. You may be familiar with some of those animals, such as the white swan or the butterfly, but there are also more exotic breeds, like the lion, the monkey, or the elephant. The composition as a whole is built around a structure of shorter fragments reminiscent of 'The Paintings Exhibition' by Moussorgsky. The parts are decorated with recognizable illustrations of the different animals. At each composition, Wittrock looks for something that can fascinate both musicians and listeners. The composer wanted to see what sort of piece would emerge if the only influence was what had already been written. The result is a sort of musical collage in which various musical collage in which various musical elements, ranging from two or three notes to complete melodies, assume importance by virtue of their context. As the work draws to a conclusion, the frantic scramble by Fogg to meet his deadline at the Reform Club in Pall Mall, London, is echoed by the soloist's increasingly demanding ascending figuration, set against the background of Big Ben clock chimes.

This work was composed by Cesar Franck in 1881, and was inspired by Burger's Ballade. The dramatic and religious character of the Poem is set from the beginning by the horns and later, by the bells.The approaching Ride is preceded by a broader passage and then, in a quick 9/8 rhythm the horns are heard again, answered by the cornets and the trombones.After some agitated passages there is a brilliant Andante movement after which the rhythm becomes more and more animated.At last the Ride appears, the gallop becoming wilder and wilder until it finally dies away in a chilling roll on the cymbal.
