Herbert L Clarke (1867 - 1945) is regarded by many as one of the finest cornet players of all time, noted not only for his amazing technique but also for his warm, lyrical tone. He has left a multitude of cornet solos as well as collections of studies which are still very widely used. He was a member of The Sousa Band briefly in 1893 and then from 1898 to 1917 where he was not only the distinguished cornet soloist but also became assistant director.The Maid Of The Mist dates from 1912 and is named after the famous sightseeing boat trips at Niagara Falls.This arrangement was prepared for a concert in May, 2009, given by Brass Band of the Western Reserve, musical director Keith M Wilkinson, in which Michael Sachs, principal trumpet of the Cleveland Orchestra, appeared as guest soloist.

September 2017 ReleaseAll the Nations (Roger Trigg)Originally written for the Melbourne Staff Band 125th Anniversary, the central theme of the music is from Psalm 86 verse 9. The tune is derived from 'Lobe den herren' before a setting of the tune 'St Peter' in a more reflective manner is presented. An invitation to worship as a group of Gods people is presented in the contemporary song 'Come, now is the time to worship' before the original material is presented and the tune 'St Peter' is heard in a full, exciting conclusion.

Previously only available in manuscript form, this euphonium solo with brass band accompaniment is now available in printed format. Euphony (meaning a pleasant, sweet sound) is based on the tunes of Sidney Cox with material taken from the songs; 'He found me', 'This one thing I know', 'You can tell out the sweet story' and 'Deep and wide'. At the time of writing, the composer remarked; 'The euphonium is often associated with melodies and harmonies that lend themselves to pleasing sounds'. That is true of this solo but it also presents considerable technical challenges for the soloist in terms of range and technique.

This march was written in 1895 when the Sousa Band played for three weeks at the Cotton States And International Exposition. This was a time when in southern USA cotton production was vitally important - the phrase Cotton is King was appropriate and widely used.This arrangement was prepared for the 2010 Summer concerts of Brass Band of the Western Reserve, musical director Dr Keith M Wilkinson. The staging directions for back-row cornets in the last section will enhance the performance.

£37.95The Year of the Dragon (Score Only)
The highlight of Cory's centenary celebrations throughout 1984 was a concert held in St. David's Hall, Cardiff, in March. The band, with the aid of funds provided by the Welsh Arts Council, commissioned Philip Sparke to write a work for first performance at this concert. The result was "The Year of the Dragon" of which the composer writes:"At the time I wrote The Year of the Dragon, Cory had won two successive National Finals and I set out to write a virtuoso piece to display the talents of this remarkable band to the full."The work is in three movements:TOCCATA opens with an arresting side drum figure and snatches of themes from various sections of the band, which try to develop until a broad and powerful theme from the middle of the band asserts itself. A central dance-like section soon gives way to the return of this theme, which subsides until faint echoes of the opening material fade to a close.INTERLUDE takes the form of a sad and languid solo for trombone. A chorale for the whole band introduces a brief spell of optimism but the trombone solo returns to close the movement quietly.FINALE is a real tour-de-force for the band with a stream of rapid semi-quavers running throughout the movement. The main theme is heroic and march-like but this is interspersed with lighter, more playful episodes. A distant fanfare to the sound of bells is introduced and this eventually returns to bring the work to a stirring close.

Still, still, still is an Austrian Christmas carol and lullaby. The melody is a folk tune from the Salzburg area and the tune appeared for the first time in 1865 in a folksong collection. The words describe the peace of the infant Jesus and his mother as the baby is sung to sleep. They have changed slightly over the years, but the modern standard German version was established in the mid-19th century. This arrangement by Stephen Tighe features the flugelhorn and horn section with brass band. PDF download includes score and parts. VIEW SCORE PDF This uplifting and rhythmic fanfare by American composer J. Aaron Stanley will be an ideal alternative to the traditional fare that is written in celebration of the Olympic Games. The composer writes: 'Most of my works start with a concept and working title in mind before I even begin composing. But Fanfare for the Olympians, on the other hand, was titled afterward, allowing the music to suggest its own title. The festive, anticipatory nature of the work seems to build excitement and tension for something celebratory and grandiose, like the Olympic Games. Written in 2000, at the time, I was obsessed with quartal harmonies and asymmetrical meters. But the driving eighth-note pulse of alternating 2+2+3 / 3+2+2 is what drives the fanfare forward to its epic climax.' 'As A Cloud..' is a work for Solo Baritone and Piano composed for Nick Wilson in 2021. The inspiration for the work comes from the words of the poet William Wordsworth and his much loved text "I wandered lonely as a cloud". In the process of writing this work, the dedicatee's desire was to have a work to reflect his passion for the Lake District - a part of Northern England which Wordworth (and several other renowned poets of the time) became synonymous with; the group of writers becoming known as 'The Lake Poets'. Musically, this programmtic work reflects the words from Wordsworth's text, painting each line of the first stanza in a variety of settings and moods before the work floats away with an audio extract from the poem itself.

DURATION: 4 minutes. DIFFICULTY: Moderate. 'As The World Falls Apart' was composed for David Maxted as part of the programme for his BMus Final Recital at the RNCM in May 2017. The work was composed in a time of real political and social divide, with chaos only ever seeming minutes away, and the base of the piece is one of serenity and traniquility amongst the bedlam which is occurring around us all. Originally, the work was planned to be a totally free unaccompanied work for solo horn, however I wanted to make use of the vast space the RNCM concert hall can offer with the surround-sound speakers and decided to utilise a short sound effect track to enhance the feeling of chaos as the music reaches it's peak in dynamic and intensity.
