The music of Cityscapes intends to parallel the impressions, sights, and sounds of a modern city to what a painter might convey with a landscape portrait. 'Morning Scene - Awakening': the quiet solitude of a sunrise, birdsong, and empty streets can betray the crowded jungle of city life. These are the last moments of sleep before the alarm goes off and the coffee goes on. 'Faces in Motion': The pavements come alive, streets fill with cars, office buildings open, the rush hour is on - and everyone is late! 'Museum Visit': To step into a museum is to visit another world. Looking at what we've been and where we've been, there's always a sense of awe at how much has gone before; and the realisation of how much there is yet to come... 'Nightlife': After hours is not the time to slow down, for the city never really sleeps. Nightclubs open, and the jazz circuit is alive with swinging sounds. This is the soul of the city. Ostentatious OvertureEuphoniumis at the French palace of Versailles with all itspomp, splendour, and magnificence.2. Mystical MinnesangerEuphoniumhas travelled to the Holy Roman Empire, where he isperforming an ode to a Germanic Knight.3. Andalusian NightsThe Caliphate of Cordoba was a mixing-pot of Islamicand Judaic music. What is fascinating is that many of the ideas aroundperformance; modes at certain times of the day, improvisation into metred,faster sections; go back to the Indian subcontinent and even furtherback into Ancient Greece.Euphonium is chanting for theCaliphate on a warm summer's evening.4. Tarantella of the TagliatelleI don't know if the Medici family ate tagliatelle,but if they did, this joyful and lively tarantella is whatEuphonium would have played.5. Terrifying TropakA complete change of mood.Euphonium is playing for a swashbucklingperformance of Ukrainian Cossacks, with leaps, stamps, and twirls.6. Sami Herding SongIn the Arctic Norwegian north,Euphonium is with the Sami calling theirherd of reindeers with vocalisations that echo in the icy distance.7. Highland FlingEuphoniumis in Scotland taking part in the Highland Games.Female dancers perform athletic jumps.8. From the Sea - Geert Jan Kroon
From the Sea is a three-part work with the theme of land reclamation. The first part (The New Land) expresses the feelings of expectation and tension that come with the brand-new land. The second part (The Old Sea) is a nostalgic look back at the (old) sea. A sea that was sometimes turbulent, but also a source of life. The third part (The Future Land) captures the joy of living on the new land up to the present day. The work was commissioned by the joint music associations of the Noordoostpolder.

Additional Score: 24.95On March 17 1923 my grandfather, John Graham, set sail from Glasgow Scotland on the TSS Cameronia, ultimately bound for the coal fields of West Virginia. As Europe struggled to recover from the aftermath of the war to end all wars a generation of young immigrants looked to the USA for the opportunity of improved prospects and a better life.Voyage to Worlds Unknown seeks to capture the mixture of emotions of this epic sea voyage and as such is unashamedly programmatic in character. The work follows a clearly defined timeline in five continuous sections:

DURATION: 4'00". DIFFICULTY: 4th+. 'By Water and the Word' was composed for 2020 Brass Band Summer School in memory of it's long-standing course administrator Philip Biggs, who passed away in 2019. Aside from his work with BBSS, Philip was also the renowned administrator for the National Youth Brass Band of Great Britain where my first opportunities as a writer of brass music were presented. It's a certainty to say that without Philip's work at the head of this organisation, there's zero chance I would be able to do what I do today as a musician, and for that it was a huge honour to write this short work in his memory. Under Maestro Bramwell Tovey, each course would conclude with an encore of The Day Thou Gavest (St. Clements) and one of the most used hymn tunes throughout the week was The Church's One Foundation (Aurelia). Since then, these two tunes have become synonymous with the NYBBGB and in turn Philip's life & work, so I felt it fitting to combine these two wonderful sacred melodies into a new work paying homage to those memories. .

DURATION: 4 minutes. DIFFICULTY: 2nd+. 'Maybury Hill Lullaby' was composed for the City of Bradford Brass Band as part of a programme of music based around both the original H.G Wells novel and 1978 adaption by Jeff Wayne of The War of the Worlds. . During the previous day, the first of the missiles from Mars had crashed into Earth and the creature within had gone about invoking chaos and destruction upon all human life nearby. 'The Narrator' (an unnamed character throughout) escapes the scene to his home on Maybury Hill, Woking and falls into a deep, haunted sleep, recalling the horrors he had witnessed before his eyes.
