This year, the British Bandsman ran a March Composition Competion with the winning enteries judged by Paul Hindmarsh, Michael Fowles, and Aidan Smith. the March, 'The Volunteer' is a pastiche contest March and was the winning entry in the 'Category 1' tier, composed in dedication to all of the volunteers who work tirelessly to make the Whit Friday march contests possible. The march was written with upper section bands in mind and aims be a complete showcase for a band's contest performance. In doing so, the music follows the form and style of contest marches popularised by great march composers George Allan, Thomas "T. J." Powell and William Rimmer. After performing a number of arrangements by Gavin Somerset, the band commissioned him to compose for them, an original march that would serve as their signature tune for years to come. The march was composed in a light 6/8 time that would get passes by listening and audience's feet tapping along. Composed with a DC, this is optional and the finale of the march has a licence for a Grandioso and accelerando to give the work that flair for its finale. "Fort Drake" was composed specially for the British Bandsman March Composition Contest. The title is a respectful parody of a well-known march cited as a model in the contest regulations. Originally just a working title, it was later accepted for its suggestion of unyielding strength and durability. Written to appeal to bands and audiences alike, the piece has striking melodies, a smooth trio section and exciting phrases featured in all instruments. This lively new Concert March, "Friends of the Band", was written in recognition of those friends and supporters of all Brass Bands whose help financially and in all other ways, are invaluable in the successful running of the organisations. There is a slight hint of the song, "Dear Old Pals, Jolly Old Pals" in the first section which again embeds the feelings all players and conductors have towards our band's supporters. The work was originally composed for the Hook Norton Brass Band, when the composer's wife gave so much of her time encouraging supporters to become friends. This is a great addition to all bands' libraries and a way to pay tribute and thanks.
