A flashback is an interesting psychological phenomenon: a seemingly random trigger can bring back long-forgotten memories from the subconscious mind. The composer underwent a similar experience before writing this piece. He was asked to write a piece for The National Youth Fanfare Band in the Netherlands, one which he heard perform many years ago. All of a sudden he remembered Deep Harmony, a piece frequently programmed back then. He used his own flashback-experience as an inspiration to weave an old English hymn into his new composition, much like a musical flashback. A Festive Tribute is an arrangement of a splendid chorus which Bach first used in the secular Cantata 207 of 1726, but is perhaps better known in its later version, which appears in Cantata 207a, the descriptively titled Auf, schmetternde Tone der muntern Trompeten, which cannot be adequately translated but means something along the lines of 'let the trumpets sound'. While the lyrics are perhaps a little obsequious, much of the music for this cantata is celebratory and lushly scored for a large orchestra including trumpets, oboes d'amore and flutes, making it an ideal piece for a concert band arrangement.Duration: 3:00

Shout! was written for Brett Baker to demonstrate a particular musical aspect of his trombone playing.It is a Latin jazz piece subtitled CCC 4 BB - Cha cha cha for Brett Baker - and shows the trombone's ability to act as a declamatory jazz voice, covering much of the range and expressive power of the instrument. This melody is reputed to have originated in Caernarvonshire, North Wales. Tradition holds that a bard called David, lying on his deathbed, called for his harp and performed this plaintive tune, expressing a desire that it should be played at his funeral. Ever since the tune has been called by his name and that of his house 'Garagwen' ('Druid Stone' or 'White Rock'). The solo is not just a slow melody with brass band accompaniment but is a composite whole, the band needing as much sensitivity as the soloist in the presentation.
